Ambiguous title

[edit]

The section on the title The Two Towers presents, um, unambiguous proof not only that the volume's title is ambiguous, but that Tolkien intended it to be so. This is reliably cited in Tolkien's letters, so the matter is not in doubt. I have repeated the citations in the image caption so that editors can see at a glance that the claims are fully cited. Well, I guess we can manage without that material for the purposes of this article, as the The Two Towers title issue was forced upon Tolkien, unlike the rest of his ambiguity, which was his deliberate choice. What I would like to do is to mention the more general statement he made that he chose to avoid having his book and chapter titles give away too much of the plot. I hope that's uncontroversial enough, and it has little or nothing to do with the Volume II question. Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:38, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
