Tertulla, daughter of Tertullus?
[edit]Hi, about Petro's wife, Tertulla: is she really the daughter of some Tertullus? Wasn't Tertulla the nickname given to all the third daughters? Did Svetonius say anything about it? The page is not in the source so I can't find it.--2.42.146.153 (talk) 09:37, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
- This claim is probably based on Christian Settipani, previously one of the sources for this article, which was created by an editor deeply interested in descent from antiquity and devoted to Settipani as a source for genealogical information. However, we can't easily verify this, or what Settipani says about Tertulla, since his work is in French and not readily accessible. Tertulla might be the daughter of a Tertullus, or as you suggest, a diminutive of Tertia, an old praenomen used as a personal name by Roman daughters (typically, by this time, placed after the gentile name, as though a cognomen). It's impossible to know from Suetonius, who mentions nothing of her background, and we don't know whether Settipani had any other reason for supposing her father's name—if indeed his work is where the claim comes from. Best to delete it now, and if someone can find what Settipani says about it, we can restore it later. I've cleaned up the article, which was oddly-worded and in need of some attention.
