Just copyediting issues, especially around commas, and one question about one source I spot-checked. This is almost ready. Ping me when fixed. Sammi Brie (she/her • t • c) 01:59, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Did you know? If you fancy doing so, I always have plenty of GA nominees to review. Just look for the all-uppercase titles in the Television section. Reviews always appreciated.

[edit]Lead
[edit]- the television series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and was released on Paramount+ on July 22, 2023 The comma after the show title is unneeded and causes a WP:CINS error.
- Hyphenate "23rd century" as an adjective.
- "Those Old Scientists" was written by a combination of Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds writers, and directed by longtime Star Trek actor and director Jonathan Frakes. Remove comma (another CinS)
Plot
[edit]- Pike explains the situation and Boimler mentions that in the future, Orions are no longer seen as dishonorable pirates and that one of their friends is an Orion. Add a comma after "situation" and another after "that" (to complete the appositive)
- Pike explains they want to send Boimler and Mariner home, and in exchange suggests that history remember Orion scientists discovered the portal More CinS. Should be Pike explains they want to send Boimler and Mariner home and, in exchange, suggests that history remember Orion scientists discovered the portal
Production
[edit]- Frakes did not campaign for the job, but felt that he was picked because of his experience acting on Lower Decks and directing Strange New Worlds. Remove comma (CinS)
- dying his hair should that not be dyeing?
- The Lower Decks uniforms were recreated for live action, but made darker Remove comma (CinS)
Release
[edit]- The episode will release on home video formats as part of the second season on December 5, 2023 Tense update
- Lacy Baugher of Den of Geek wrote that the humor might not land for every viewer, but the show should be applauded for taking creative risks. maybe Lacy Baugher of Den of Geek wrote that the humor might not land for every viewer but felt that the show should be applauded for taking creative risks.
- The Verge' should be 's
- Critics found the comic tone of Lower Decks meshed with that of Strange New Worlds, and demonstrated the increased variety of storytelling the Star Trek franchise employed Remove comma (CinS)
- DiCandido thought the shift to live action made Mariner a less annoying character, and hoped the events of the episode would be reflected in Lower Decks's run. Remove comma (CinS)
- The Escapist's Darren Mooney felt the episode felt Gonna mark this up in felt-tip pen, because I felt you used "felt" too much here.
Sourcing and spot checks
[edit]- 1: DeCandido is used four times:
It’s kind of amazing that Trek has mostly avoided a crossover like this until now. TNG and DS9 played at it with occasional guest appearances, plus both shows helped set the Maquis up for Voyager, but they never really mixed it up.
Ransom in particular makes a semi-lewd comment about Number One, which is an amusing in-joke, since O’Connell is married to Rebecca Romijn…
I’m pleased to say that “Those Old Scientists” is one of those best crossovers. It works perfectly as an episode of SNW and also as an episode of LD. And it’s just a great episode of Star Trek.
Mariner’s bull-in-a-china-shop act is at least as disruptive as Boimler’s nerdity—although, weirdly, it’s less annoying in live-action than in animation. ...
I can't find the part about the effect of the events in LD in the article; can you?- I grabbed it from another Dicandido thing on Tor, but on rereading it I feel like it's still a little beyond what the source is inferring so I just trimmed it. - 6: Space.com review, used three times:
this one is really all about fan service
In fact, the episode title, "Those Old Scientists" is a play on the acronym TOS, which also stands for "The Original Series." There are, naturally, hundreds of other subtle in-jokes, references, nods, homages and Easter eggs.
Mike McMahan remarked on how he thought it was a shame that news had already broken of the planned crossover event, adding that he would've much preferred it if, immediately after the normal "live action" opening credits, the show cut straight to the opening scene but with the animated characters from "Lower Decks."
- 10: Announcement at SDCC 2022.
- 15: TrekMovie:
arguably it’s the funniest episode of the series so far
- 18: Vulture:
But Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds are shows with extremely different tones and performance styles. The difference should be so jarring to make any merging of universes impossible.
Earwig finds few issues. Mostly, it's flagging the show title (especially SNW).

- Hey Sammi Brie, thanks for the review. Between me and Dcdiehardfan I think we've addressed all of the above. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs talk 22:55, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
