Hotellier?

[edit]

The article states that "The St. Nicholas Hotel opened [in 1853]...and the Maddock and Leigh firm decorated dinnerware for them."

Coincidentally, on the 1865 New York State Census of Brooklyn:

[1]

Thomas Maddock identifies "Hotel" in "Brooklyn" as his occupation. It is curious that he would not have identified himself as a potter for his own partnership firm.

Conversely, in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census (after relocating to Jersey City, New Jersey) Thomas identifies his occupation as "China & Crockery" [2]

Is there any body of evidence that supports that Thomas Maddock might have actually been employed by St. Nicholas between 1853 and 1865-- rather than contracting with them--as Maddock & Leigh--for dinnerware production?
