The First Ox Roasting at Harrogate by Holroyd

[edit]

This missing painting was almost certainly destroyed when the Council's artworks store in the cellar beneath Harrogate's Winter Gardens was flooded in 1984. The above painting is said to have been found damaged there, and has not been seen since, although a black and white photograph of it still exists (I haven't seen it yet). I have been given this information by a Harrogate historian, and I am hoping to discover that it is in one of his books, so that I can cite this information in the article. Until then, I'm leaving the information here, in case any reference is forthcoming, to improve the article.

Meanwhile, I have a strong memory of seeing this painting in a gallery soon after I first came to Leeds in 1981. I am wondering whether it could have been lent to Leeds Art Gallery between 1981 and 1984? Storye book (talk) 12:24, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
