Unsourced future episodes

[edit]

This edit restores information on several forthcoming episodes. A fair amount of discussion has already taken place on my talk page

A brief summary: ACase0000 states they have "connections with HiT Entertainment" and that the material does not come from a published source. They have promised that they are not adding false information and have asked me to trust them.

I have stated that we need a reliable source for the information.

Comments please. - SummerPhDv2.0 01:52, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@SummerPhDv2.0: Thank You. :D --ACase0000 (talk) 01:54, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ACase0000 wants an admin to look into this. I said I would ping an admin who had already worked on this article to join the discussion. I see that Cyphoidbomb has edited this talk page. I have been a bit chatty with Cyphoid, though. While I do not doubt his neutrality, I could certainly see another editor thinking there might be a problem in that regard. Yes, I have pinged Cyphoid. If he wishes to recuse and ask for someone else to weigh in, that's fine. If either of you wish to have this handled through another channel (see WP:DISPUTE, possibly WP:3O) because this request doesn't really fit with the role of Wiki admins, that's fine as well. - SummerPhDv2.0 02:16, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a source for one episode. I am searching for others. --ACase0000 (talk) 08:47, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The source confirms there is an episode "Best Engine Ever!". It does not confirm the director or that it is part of series 19. The summary was copied verbatim. I am removing it as a copyright violation. - SummerPhDv2.0 14:07, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi all. Copy/pasted edit summaries are a pollution here. Thanks for removing 'em, Summer. ACase000, though I can appreciate that you might have an in-the-know connection to the series, like anywhere else we require content to be verifiable, i.e. we cannot go into a library and check out your brain and research what you personally know. Similarly, if a doctor is an expert on a delicate technique, we wouldn't allow her personal testimony to be included in an article—that would constitute WP:OR. Content would need to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, for instance. Obviously we're talking about the world of children's television, which is more frivolous, but the rule still applies: the content needs to be verifiable by people who are not directly connected to the series. The other argument I'd make is that we have no deadline. We're not in any rush to scoop the rest of the Thomas-loving world with new data. Sound, verifiable data is (are?) always preferable than new, unsourced data, and improperly sourced data is likely to cause more trouble than its worth, what with the chillruns being so overenthusiastic and all. ("Nuh uh!" "Uh huh!" "Prove it!") So to summarize (no relation to SummerPhD) we need references that explicitly confirm the episode titles. Director/writer content can be gleaned from the primary source (the episode) once the episode airs, but not before, unless there is a clear reliable source for this data. And lastly, edit summaries may absolutely not be copied or closely paraphrased from non-free sources. Regards to all. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:53, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyphoidbomb: I can show you screenshots (maybe of two episode's title cards). If that helps. --ACase0000 (talk) 00:50, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
To be verifiable, anyone reading Wikipedia would need to be able to "check that the information comes from a reliable source." Screen shots of unreleased videos from an anonymous source do not meet that standard. - SummerPhDv2.0 01:31, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@SummerPhDv2.0: They have been released! Here is proof, Toad and the Whale and Wild Water Rescue are real. Toad and the Whale and Wild Water Rescue. --ACase0000 (talk) 01:45, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The youtube posts are apparently copyright violations. Do you have sources we can cite? - SummerPhDv2.0 00:46, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@SummerPhDv2.0: How are they that??? --ACase0000 (talk) 01:05, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Whomever posted them to youtube does not own the copyright to that material: "Thomas & Friends is owned and copyright of HiT Entertainment Limited. I own nothing. No money has, or will ever, be made from this video." Whether they make anything or not by posting them, it is a copyright violation. We cannot link to them. - SummerPhDv2.0 03:29, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@SummerPhDv2.0: Oh, Well. Suit yourself. --ACase0000 (talk) 03:44, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
"Suit yourself" isn't quite the right response. It is community-wide policy that we do not link to copyright violations, not just Summer-wide policy. Linking to copyright violations is considered "contributory infringement". Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:43, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@SummerPhDv2.0: Sorry. I haven't got anything else to say. --ACase0000 (talk) 18:54, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikis are not reliable sources. See WP:USERG. We only use reliable published sources that have a reputation for fact-checking and a clear editorial oversight. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 20:21, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Voice section

[edit]

I don't understand why, out of all the thousands of episode list articles, Thomas & Friends articles are among the only ones to have voice cast lists. Where was the discussion for that? In this edit, ACase0000 restored characters like "Some Children, Some Passengers and The Blond-haired Boy". My mind boggles at why we're cataloging voice and characters in these articles at all, let alone presumably trivial characters like "some passengers". Can you explain, ACase? Your two word explanation "Actually Characters" doesn't quite sate my curiosity. Each episode presumably has its own credits. Why are we replacing the primary source (the show itself) as the delivery mechanism for this information? When did Wikipedia become IMDb? Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:57, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Cyphoidbomb: Because each season has the same cast yet, some its a little different. The Blond-haired boy is an actual character that has been appearing since Series 13. --ACase0000 (talk) 17:05, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The question isn't whether the character is a "real" character, the question is if we're talking about a trivial background character, or a main character. Typically main characters have names and are integral parts of an episode. I don't see any mention of the blond boy in the episode summaries. And I still don't understand the need for the cast table. If there are minor differences in the cast from season to season, it seems more logical to mention the differences in prose rather than to reprint entire cast lists. This is an episode list. It's also worth noting that the WikiProject Television community expressly dislikes the use of tables for cast, which means the content is already deviating from community norms. Are you aware of any discussion taking place about these tables? Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:15, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyphoidbomb: He doesn't have appear to have a name. But he does have a supporting role in several episodes. (One in 19). I honesty think ALL season pages should have cast lists. And no I do not know of any discussions. --ACase0000 (talk) 17:40, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalization in English, italics and such

[edit]

In German, all nouns are capitalized. In English, we do not capitalize all nouns, only proper nouns and the first word in a sentence. There are exceptions, but let's keep this simple.

The children are not named "Some Children". We wouldn't say, "Look out for the train, Some Children!" As a result, when we say that someone voiced them, we do not capitalize. The role is "some children".

On Wikipedia, we do not use italics just because we feel like it. Titles of individual episodes are put in quotation marks. We do not use:

Episode Title only.

Instead, it should read: "Episode Title" only.

From this point on, I will correct occasional errors of this sort. If, however, you undo corrections while adding new material, you can reasonably expect that I will revert the entire edit.

If you do not understand, ask for help. If you do not want to understand, please go away. - SummerPhDv2.0 17:19, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
