- ... that Ilya Repin changed the main character in his painting They Did Not Expect Him (pictured) from a woman because it looked too similar to another painting? Source: Grabar, Igor (1948). Репин. Vol. 1. Moscow: Издательство Академии наук СССР. p.8
- Comment: Hello! I created this article today and I think it's good and interesting enough to appear on DYK. This is my 3rd ever DYK nomination.
Created by Golden (talk). Self-nominated at 22:56, 11 April 2022 (UTC).
- Many of the references are archived and in Russian so I must AGF. There are s few technical issues: "Narodniki" series,is mentioned in the lead, but not supported in the body with references. Also: paragraph three of the lead is entirely unsupported and does not appear in the body. It seems like that whole paragraph should be under Reception. The image is excellent and free. The QPQ is not needed. Several block-quotes need to be cited. The hook appears in the body, and it is interesting, however I do not have access to the reference which purports to support it so would have to AGF. Bruxton (talk) 01:55, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
- Bruxton, Thank you for reviewing the article. 1) The "Narodniki" series is actually supported in the body (3rd paragraph of Background section), although I used the term "theme of Narodism" there which probably made it hard to find for you. 2) You're right about the 2nd point, I had completely forgotten to add about those reviews in the article body. I've added them now. 3) You can Google Translate the source for the hook to confirm it if you'd like. Here's the link for the page. — Golden call me maybe? 07:31, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks - I enjoyed the article and especially the image. I have never nominated an image before for FP but I nominated this one. Thanks for your contributions. Bruxton (talk) 15:30, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
- Glad you enjoyed it! Good luck with the featured picture nomination. Cheers. — Golden call me maybe? 15:47, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

@Bruxton: Hi, I believe you forgot to close this DYK. — Golden call me maybe? 17:17, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Golden: it has the green tick. Bruxton (talk) 17:18, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Bruxton: I believe you also need to replace the "passed=" at the top of the article with "passed=yes" among a few other things. (see T:TDYK#How to promote an accepted hook) — Golden call me maybe? 17:22, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Golden: this nomination is in the nom approved section. It is out of process for me to review and promote the article. So we have to wait for another editor to check my work and approve the nom to a prep set. Bruxton (talk) 17:24, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Bruxton: Ah, didn't know that. Sorry for the disturbance. — Golden call me maybe? 17:29, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

Narodniki series
[edit]Golden, I saw the DYK nomination and am confused by the similar but different descriptions of the "Narodniki" series in the background and creation sections. Assuming there is only one Narodism series, could they be combined?
- Background a series of paintings on the theme of Narodism. The earliest of this series is the painting "Under Escort. On The Muddy Road", followed by two versions of "Arrest of a Propagandist", "Refusal of Confession" and "The Revolutionary Meeting"
- Creation They Did Not Expect Him is part of Repin's "Narodniki" series which also includes the paintings "Arrest of a Propagandist" (Арест пропагандиста; 1880—1889), "Before Confession" (Перед исповедью; 1879—1885) and "Meeting" (Сходка; 1883) TSventon (talk) 14:45, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
- @TSventon: That is a mistake. Thanks for pointing it out, it's fixed now. — Golden call me maybe? 16:42, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Golden: thank you, I hadn't heard of Repin before. Should the lead say that there are four other artworks in the series ("Under Escort. On The Muddy Road", "Arrest of a Propagandist", "Refusal of Confession" and "The Revolutionary Meeting"), or possibly that it is a series of five paintings? TSventon (talk) 17:23, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
- Changed it to say
The painting is part of Repin's "Narodniki" series, which includes four other artworks
— Golden call me maybe? 17:53, 12 April 2022 (UTC)- @Golden:, I have done some copy editing, please correct if I have misunderstood anything. I suggest explaining Narodism, Varvara Komarova, Peredvizhniki, triturated and possibly Narodnaya Volya in the text, as well as wikilinking them. I expect many main page readers will, like myself, be unfamiliar with them. TSventon (talk) 19:57, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for the copyediting. I've gone ahead and added explanations for the terms you suggested. — Golden call me maybe? 20:15, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

@Golden:, (and @Bruxton:), I think the mention of the "Narodniki" series in the body of the article got lost following our conversation above. Could "The earliest of this series" be changed to "The earliest of the "Narodniki" series"? Do the following references support the "Narodniki" name for the series? TSventon (talk) 16:03, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
- Done. "Narodniki" is the name of the series supported by the references and it's clearer this way. — Golden call me maybe? 16:09, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
