[edit]Polyurethanes are a group of plastics that are either thermosetting or thermoplastic. Polyurethanes can be created into both flexible and inflexible foams. The flexible foam is often used in furniture and automobile cushions, in mattresses, and for carpet backings. The rigid foam is used as thermal insulation in refrigerators, trucks, and buildings. When used in furniture, the rigid foam is molded into mirror frames, shells of chairs, and other parts previously made from wood. Some polyurethanes are highly elastic materials that are resistant to chemical attack and resistant to abrasion. They are often used in solid rubber tires and the heels of shoes. Lycra is a fiber used in stretch clothing; Lycra is an example of a polyurethane. Among other uses, polyurethanes are also used as decorative and protective coatings because of their high gloss, hardness, resistance, and toughness.[1]
Polyurethanes (PU) represent a class of polymers that have found widespread use in the medical, automotive, and industrial fields. They exist in many aspects of modern life and can be found in products such as furniture, coatings, adhesives, fibers, padding materials, paints, construction materials, elastomers, and even synthetic skin. PU elastomers containing thermoplastic character were first used in the 1950s. They became commercially available during the early 1960s. Today, they are one of the most versatile products in the group of engineering thermoplastics with elastometric properties.
This article may be too technical for most readers to understand
[edit]Really? Is that true? Most readers looking up Thermoplastic polyurethane are going to be technically literate - or would not be here in the first place. There seems to be this idea that if something is to technical for the mainstream editors that it is a problem with the presentation - not that the subject is inherently complex. Not everything can be expressed at a high-school level. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.243.106.82 (talk) 20:19, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
Physical Characteristics
[edit]Please would someone knowledgeable add some information about the melting temperature and other physical characteristics ? Many thanks ! Darkman101 (talk) 08:50, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
Are TPU biologically degradable? Which ones, under which circumstances? And how long does it take? --Mitschreiber99 (talk) 08:30, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
