Time paradox

[edit]

In 1982, Deming's book Quality, Productivity, and Competitive Position was published by the MIT Center for Advanced Engineering. I was renamed Out of the Crisis in 1986. This book presented his 14 key principles.

Theory Z: How American Business Can Meet the Japanese Challenge was published by Ouchi in 1981.

This article reads that

  • "Japanese Management" and Theory Z itself were based on Dr. W. Edwards Deming's famous "14 points".

Shouldn't it be the other way around? I mean, it is more likely that Deming based his work on Ouchi's. Ouchi published his work one year before Deming did his. Can anyone explain this?

Deming had been working on this stuff for a long time. It doesn't look as though there was a publication of the 14 pints before 82, but there may have been. He may also have worked with or taught Ouchi. Certainly others have drawn this inference. See http://archive.is/hCeCx for example. Ther is a more nuanced approach here. See also here for quality circles, and a little more commentary.
