Did people forget that this band used to be called "The Kingpin Wrecking Crew" for a good 10 years before they changed to "The Wrecking"?
They did one album as "The Kingpin Wrecking Crew", which I think was self-titled. It had maybe 7 songs - all funky stuff with Hammond organ/Wurlitzer keyboards. In fact, the label that released their first album was called "oldschoolfunkandblues records". Then they met this dude, Joe McCann, who ended up rapping/turntabling for them, and they released a full-length album, "From the Roots Up". And that was like crossoer hip-hop/funk.
Then their bassist, Ty Munroe, got married and went somewhere. They asked me if I wanted to play bass with them, but I was heading to college and decided that was more important. So I think they either hired a bassist for touring, or Joe ended up also doing some synth stuff to take care of the bass, or Karl (keys) took over some bass parts.
Then at some point they got the new record deal, and changed their name to "The Wrecking". I remember voting for them for some cover-song contest they did. I think it was some new U2 song (something about "boots") - and they ended up winning I think. Anyway, they had already been working on "Abolition Strategy", so they probably took those songs and continued on.
In any event, they've been changing their style since day 1. I personally was a fan of the first album (I'm an old-school funk and blues kinda guy). But they did that for 5 years, then the hip-hop crossover thing for 5 years, and now they're doing the Christian U2 copycat sound for a while. I think also they wanted to go for a more praise-and-worship sound, which some Christians might believe the ultimate form of music should be.
They'd probably kill me if they knew I was writing this
