Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai → The World God Only Knows — 01:13, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
I think we should change this manga/anime/lightnovel series name to it's official english title: The World God Only Knows. It will be helpful for those who only know about this series by it's English title.(Which includes me.) Your thoughts about it.--FonFon Alseif (talk) 18:38, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- The thing that irks me here is that the title — albeit being official — just seems wrong. It's the world only God knows, yet the official English title seems carry the meaning of a world God only knows, but cannot see/touch/feel/send letters to etc.
- Seems kind of wrong, because the traditional method of using this figure of speech is to have a statement after that, or end one to make a point: "God only knows how many bird there are on this planet.", "Men of old have handed it down as Paul's, but who wrote the Epistle God only knows." (see here) which puts the stress on only. Compare with "Peter only saw the picture, he didn't paint it." where the stress would usually be on the saw or Peter, depending on the context, but never on only. The original Japanese doesn't seem to carry that meaning at all. --Tauwasser (talk) 19:34, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- Just so you know the "God" in that phrase is Keima the main character himself who sees himself as a god of dating sims so therefore it can actually mean "The World Keima only Knows" which refers to him being only knowledgeable about the world of dating sims. Even though the title may be phrase wrongly, it is still the official english title. Even Crunchyroll who is also streaming the series online, also names the series "The World God Only Knows". I hope more people will talk about the name change.--FonFon Alseif (talk) 01:05, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
- Why discuss semantics over the title of the series, rather than to follow Wikipedia's policy on deciding article titles? As FonFon Alseif mentioned in the first post, its official English name is instantly recognizable to the readers; majority of the readers will most likely use its English title to search for the article versus its Japanese title in English; despite it is the same length, the English title is easier for the readers to remember. I will move this main article in a day or so if no one reasonably disagrees with it. --BishojoMeister (talk) 23:11, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
- I have no problem here. Go ahead. And thanks.--FonFon Alseif (talk) 00:44, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

- Per both WP:USEENGLISH and WP:COMMONNAME, I support a move to The World God Only Knows as that is the title used by reliable third-party sources, such as Anime News Network[1] and Mania.com[2] as well as Crunchyroll, which is simulcasting the series with English subtitles. —Farix (t | c) 01:13, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- I concur with what the previous person said bureaucratically. Must we now wait for the discussion to close to rename and move? It seems a consensus has been reached already and I do not think it is feasible to provide valid (counter)arguments based off ATP to object to the rename and move. —BishojoMeister (talk) 05:17, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- Support rename. With anime adaptation simulcast, the most common naming for this series in the English speaking world is The World God Only Knows. --KrebMarkt (talk) 19:09, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

Name in English
[edit]Since the franchise has been marketed as "The World God Only Knows," then I think the requested move was decided correctly. But, yes, it would be more properly entitled "The World Only God Knows" in English. (And as to FonFon Alseif's point about Keima only knowing about the world of dating sims, that would be "The Only World God Knows.") --98.176.34.215 (talk) 23:26, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
- Unless the manga gets an official translation under another name. Then it might change.∞陣内Jinnai 03:49, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
- In the event of an official translation under another name, that would make sense. :-) --98.176.34.215 (talk) 23:47, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
