ITP Core 2 Planning Conversation
[edit]May I suggest that the first thing you do is reread the material the class wrote on your subject (Wealth of Networks) last semester. I would recommend that someone post the links to those blog posts here. It would then be helpful to outline what was written in these posts *very roughly*. Two to four sentences per post. There will likely be more than 1 post. Other next steps: identify section headings, if they are not already in the article. And then identify what content should go in which sections. You may also need to ask if there are any sections in the book that were not read in the assigned reading, and/or written about in these blog posts, that is essential for the article.--Theredproject (talk) 19:13, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
Hi all: I'm not sure if this is the proper forum for asking this but I'm trying to avoid email (feel free to delete this if it's in the wrong place). Did I miss a conversation about deadlines and division of labor? Are we supposed to be dividing up the chapters in some way and each writing a paragraph or so on them? Or is this week just laying the groundwork for future content creation?Coldwater4 (talk
- I am also not sure if this is the proper forum to ask/discuss these things, but I am going to go with it! I am not sure if there has been a decision reached of some kind regarding division of labor, etc... I know the deadline for the whole project is March 8th. So I think at the moment, the only thing that has been discussed is the gathering of written material (class provocations from last semester), and summarizing what each provocation focuses on. I don't believe we have discussed how we are going to structure the article / sections of the article yet. But I wanted to volunteer myself - I have a lot of information and writing about the critical reception of the Wealth of Networks, as it was a main focus of my midterm paper last semester, so if we ultimately want a section on that in the article, I can start putting that together. Hello all! So I thought I would get the ball rolling with talking about how we want to organize / structure the article. I was perusing some other book pages on wikipedia to get a sense of how other people have approached book articles, and as we discussed in class, a thematic approach may be best for our purposes. We have a couple of options regarding what direction we could go with this: The Wealth of Networks is divided into three parts - 1) The Networked information economy, 2) The Political Economy of Property and the Commons, and 3) Policies of Freedom at a Moment of transformation. So we could, if we wanted, base our division of concepts in the article on these three over arching"themes" or "parts". We could also be more specific - break it into more specific themes, such as "Property and the Cultural Commons", "Economics of Sharing, "the Public sphere", and "Sociology of the Networked Information Economy", (and I am totally open to refining these more specific themes! this list is jsut an initial brainstorm, so I am sure there are some parts I have missed) and then also include a summary at the beginning, a section on critical reception, a section of key references. Any thoughts? Nbwrites (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 03:07, 22 February 2012 (UTC).
- Hello again everyone! Just wanted to let you know - I started a sandbox for The Wealth of Networks in my account - is can be found at User:Nbwrites/sandbox. I just started to put some initial things in - sections headings, etc., but please feel free to change things / add to things. I know we haven't really decided yet how we are structuring the article, but I just thought I'd take an initial stab at getting a sandbox started for us. But we really do need to discuss how we want to approach this - any thoughts? Nbwrites (talk) 16:01, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, Nbwrites. I agree it's time to delegate and appreciate you getting this rolling and offering critical reception. I am going to find some key quotes from Benkler and add them to the sandbox this afternoon.Hadassahd (talk) 19:06, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
- Good start all. I would suggest two things: 1. delegate and jump in. It seems like Nbwrites and Hadassahd have sort of self-selected their areas, but i would encourage a more formal delineation of who does what. You can self select, or at this point, Nbwrites and Hadassahd should feel free to delegate, as they have most likely have the best sense of what needs to be done, having done most of the writing so far. 2. move your discussion to the sandbox talk page.--Theredproject (talk) 18:41, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Where to look for things
[edit]Hi all, this article is being built over at sandbox talk page. I'm hoping the summaries that Ria# and Coldwater started below can get pasted in over there? I've added some outlines from notes in the sections already, and Nbwrites has worked on a lot of critical reception. Hadassahd (talk) 16:20, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

- Great, now you need to come up with a plan for how to get the appropriate content onto Wikipedia. This might be a good place to make use of a /Sandbox?--Theredproject (talk) 19:41, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

[edit]- Amy's Provocations on Benkler's Intro
Shift towards decentralised individualised action; Wikipedia question: how does this work for free on volunteer hours; networked aconomy and political values: Benkler's notion of "liberalism"
- Hadassah's Provocations on Pt. 2 Ch. 6
The "ideal" public sphere (PS); history of the development of PSs in the US and control by mass media outlets; need for points of access so that any citizen can engage with the PS without any restrictions or hierarchies to access. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ria4983 (talk • contribs) 13:18, 14 February 2012 (UTC) My sense is that there is a reasonable critique to be made (and I think this has been made by some) that Benkler's conception of the digital public sphere is a bit triumphalist in suggesting that "designing" experiences that are anti-hierarchical will ensure democratic participation. I think he underestimates powerful corporate and state actors in this sense. Anyway, I think people have written about this so maybe I can find some citations for this part... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Coldwater4 (talk • contribs) 17:48, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- Question: are these provocations something that will or will not make it into the final Wikipedia article?--Theredproject (talk) 19:37, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Attention,Coldwater4 - I thought it would be best to move your question and my response into the ITP Core 2 Planning Conversation section of this talk page, just so we dont get things jumbled with the provocation summaries/chapter summaries! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nbwrites (talk • contribs) 16:38, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
Impact of recent student edits
[edit]This article has recently been edited by students as part of their course work for a university course. As part of the quality metrics for the education program, we would like to determine what level of burden is placed on Wikipedia's editors by student coursework.
If you are an editor of this article who spent time correcting edits to it made by the students, please tell us how much time you spent on cleaning up the article. Please note that we are asking you to estimate only the negative effects of the students' work. If the students added good material but you spent time formatting it or making it conform to the manual of style, or copyediting it, then the material added was still a net benefit, and the work you did improved it further. If on the other hand the students added material that had to be removed, or removed good material which you had to replace, please let us know how much time you had to spend making those corrections. This includes time you may have spent posting to the students' talk pages, or to Wikipedia noticeboards, or working with them on IRC, or any other time you spent which was required to fix problems created by the students' edits. Any work you did as a Wikipedia Ambassador for that student's class should not be counted.
Please rate the amount of time spent as follows:
- 0 -No unproductive work to clean up
- 1 - A few minutes of work needed
- 2 - Between a few minutes and half an hour of work needed
- 3 - Half an hour to an hour of work needed
- 4 - More than an hour of work needed
Please also add any comments you feel may be helpful. We welcome ratings from multiple editors on the same article. Add your input here. Thanks! -- LiAnna Davis (WMF) (talk) 20:13, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
