This book is not a fantasy novel, it is an SF novel that masquerades as a fantasy novel in a similar way to Gene Wolfe's shadow of the torturer books. Just because someone uses a sword and uses "magic" (see A.C Clarke's explanation of magic) doesn't make it a fantasy novel. The difference between the two is the mechanics.
