Regarding the description: "lacks representation by noted pioneers of the genre such as E. E. "Doc" Smith, Jack Vance and Alfred Bester," I think we point to a different lineage than is suggested here. But this bit is lit-crit in any case, rather than encyclopedism as WP understands it.
Also, what is essentially a pre-print of the book's introduction appeared in SFRevu in 2003: http://www.sfrevu.com/ISSUES/2003/0308/Space%20Opera%20Redefined/Review.htm --Pleasantville 11:39, 24 July 2007 (UTC) (aka Kathryn Cramer)
Also, I suppose it bears mentioning that this book is a companion volume to The Hard SF Renaissance. They were orignially one book that would have two parts, but it got too long, so after long conversations with Greg Benford, who as I recall was visiting us at the time (a couple of days before 9/11), we decided to split the book in two; we got Tor to go along with this, and got a second contract. --Pleasantville 14:31, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
