"Smashing Pumpkins" vs "The Smashing Pumpkins"

'Gish', 'Lull', 'Siamese Dream', and 'Pisces Iscariot' were titled "Smashing Pumpkins" without using the word "The" at the beginning, and were promoted as such during their breakout years. The article does not reflect the band's early title. They didn't start using "The" at the front of their name until 'Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness', despite Corgan's insistence to the contrary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.172.211.172 (talk) 07:41, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

There have been extensive discussions on this. Either name is perfectly acceptable, and neither hinders the readers understanding or recognizability for the band. They're both the same thing. With both acceptable, we usually keep with this one, so we're not changing it every couple of months based on the whims of whoever happens to be editing on a given day. Jimmy Chamberlin's Status in 2016

Okay, so Billy Corgan gave an interview with Rolling Stone on March 17, 2016. Here is the link

When asked directly if Jimmy is back in the band, Corgan replied: "There really are no band members. And if anybody's in the band, it's Jeff."

Corgan further states that he is "past the point of trying to define what the band is". What does this mean for this article, and the List of The Smashing Pumpkins band members? Should Corgan and Jeff Schroeder be the only listed "official" members in light of this interview and statement? WereWolf (talk) 03:21, 18 March 2016 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw this article yesterday and was wondering about this too. In regards to how Wikipedia usually organizes things, and what Corgan said, I guess the best approach would be to list Corgan and Schroeder as members, and the rest, Chamberlain included, as just touring members/musicians? If he plays on the next album, then maybe put him back as a member? I mean, bands like Nine Inch Nails and Filter (band) also have that same "revolving/open door" situation with members that Corgan speaks of, but we still consider them members of sorts, usually defined by whether their touring, recording, or both, with the band. Sergecross73 msg me 13:00, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
I agree with you, I think that the best option in this case is to list Billy Corgan and Jeff Schroeder as the two official members and list everyone else participating in the touring members section. If Jimmy Chamberlin performs on a new Smashing Pumpkins record, then I think he will be promoted to full-member status unless Corgan states otherwise. The Nine Inch Nails and Filter comparisons are great examples of how to organize these kinds of "one-man bands" situations. But yes, I think there should be an "official member" section and a "touring member" section. WereWolf (talk) 14:12, 19 March 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, but this is starting to reek of WP:RECENTISM. Are you three trying to suggest that James Iha, D'arcy Wretzky, Jimmy Chanberlin and Mike Byrne were never more than touring musicians? Because I'd doubt I'd be the only editor here to take exception to that. Homeostasis07 (talk) 01:08, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
...Did you read the article or the section title? We're not trying to rewrite history, we're just trying to identify chamberlains role in 2016. (When Werewolf writes list everyone else participating in the touring members section, I'm relatively certain he's referring to the 2016 linuep, not everyone who's ever been in the band in these last 30 years.) Mea culpa. Homeostasis07 (talk) 00:39, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
No problem. I hope my response wasn't too rude, your input discussion and input has been very helpful in the past. Sergecross73 msg me 01:20, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
No WP:RECENTISM here, I was just asking about the current status of Jimmy Chamberlin. I never said that any of the previous members weren't official members, I was simply wondering what to do with the new information Corgan provided in the interview. I am referring to the current 2016 lineup when I brought up the touring musicians section. I believe that Chamberlin does belong in the touring member section as of 2016 along with the other two female members, Katie Cole and Sierra Swan, whom are accompanying Corgan and Schroeder (the two "official" members) on the current tour (I cannot remember their names right now). James Iha - 2016

Unless a reliable source directly states he's back in the band, him playing one concert in 16 years does not make him a member. Sergecross73 msg me 18:52, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

Absolutely agree, this is beyond WP:LIKELY and I'd personally like to see multiple reliable sources. One can certainly hope, though :) MusikAnimal talk 19:58, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

Mike Byrne 2016

An IP keeps adding that he's back in the band. Is this true or is it just vandalism or a misinformed IP? Sergecross73 msg me 23:29, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

Nevermind, pretty much every edit the IP is making is wrong. (Like Fred Durst joining Sevendust. Likely hoax Sergecross73 msg me 23:47, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
