Comment

[edit]

With such a shortage of referenced interpretations, perhaps I can make a few comments. The large Vettriano exhibition at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum in Glasgow was the first large exhibition of his work in Scotland, which itself says something interesting. Art curators in Scotland have indeed been quite hostile to his work. Their idea of proper Scottish painting is perhaps the Scottish colourist movement, one of the hight-points of British art.

Our interpretation of The Singing Butler is not helpful to the reader who might wonder about what he or she is looking at. Everything in the painting is deliberate, and really asks the viewer to explain why, while looking superficially so realistic, it is actually a fantasy. A fantasy with touches of the surreal. The dreamlike landscape, the way the wind and rain don't touch the principal figures, the reversed dance hold, the very idea that a butler and maid are present, the very idea of dancing on a beach... It reminds one of the way surrealists used dreams and the unconscious mind as touchstones. And, of course, it's got the man/woman tension and the 1950s references which are quite typical of Vettriano. Macdonald-ross (talk) 11:23, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not only is the dance hold reversed; are they not hopelessly out of step? There is nowhere for them to go in that position. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alberich4 (talkcontribs) 21:22, 29 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Vettriano, Singing Butler.jpg

[edit]

File:Vettriano, Singing Butler.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a non-free use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
