Semantics issue

The first sentence for this article reads, "The Sims 3 is a 2009 strategic life simulation computer game...." However, this statement has two contradicting terms, "simulation" and "game".

A game is interactive, has game-defined objectives to complete, and a winning condition among one or more losing conditions. Chess, for example, is a game. It is interactive (that is, players play the game). The objectives are to take other pieces, protect your king, and attack the other king. The winning condition is that you checkmate the other king. The losing condition is that your king is checkmated.

A simulator is interactive and has user-defined objectives to complete. Unlike a game, there is no game-defined winning condition or losing condition. The Sims 3, for example, is a computerized simulator. It is interactive (that is, users control the simulation). The objectives are whatever the user wants them to be. The user may or may not define his or her own winning/losing conditions.

A simulator is not a game and should not be considered as such.

The first sentence of this article should read something to the effect of, "The Sims 3 is a 2009 strategic life computer simulator...."

Jarmihi (talk) 18:50, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

I can agree with your 'game'-semantics arguement but I must contest on the Simulator protest. The Sims, the name, is itself a contraction of Simulation, and the entire series, anything with a Sim prefix e.g. SimCity, just means City Simulator. To not call it a simulator would be an insult to the game, and the nomenclature. It is at its heart a simulation of life, the Sims.
As for the game moniker, what else should we call it. Or maybe we can say its a 'unique kind of video game' or 'never-ending video game' or even 'continuous game'. I'm guessing this argument too, extends to Spore as it is also, a continuous game with infinite play time ahead of it.
Objectives point can be passed owing to the fact the Sims 3 in particular implements 'Opportunities'—almost* like objectives—that will require the player to do a set or a single task to advance in a list of opportunities or just this one. However the opportunity does not require to be accepted. Which rules out this counterargument. Aiden 17:18, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
While it may be a semantic issue, consideration should be given for the common understanding of the terms rather than scientific or even technical definitions. In common parlance, "simulation" IN THIS CONTEXT is termed as a game (examples being the venerable flight simulator games that incorporated actual game play rather than tediously flying around and looking at colored polygons from years gone by). EP/SP removals

I noticed that recently more content had been added to the EP/ SP sections, like "Seasonal" and "Future Living". But now they're gone. Why? Paleo Kid (talk) 20:12, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

I guess that they're just not reliable... Paleo Kid (talk) 00:01, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

They haven't been confirmed.

Public Vote on recent EP/SP information removal

I noticed that The Sims 3 has "rumored" that there would be two installments in first quarter of 2012, and thus, not worthy enough to post the unreliable information that has not been confirmed by Electronic Arts or The Sims Studios. So, if I am out of line or not looking at The Sims 3 official site about the Master Suite Stuff, and so please {{Cite}} and {{Ref}} the item if there is any published [ress release(s) about this and subsequent installment releases. Just a Wikipedia rule to reference things when there is NO INFORMATION is available at publishing post on this, and others, sites. Common Sense. Articles for Stuff Packs

I was just looking at the Spanish Wikipedia, and noticed they had individual articles for stuff packs there. What do you think? Zach.vega1 (talk) 12:00, 23 August 2011 (UTC) i think that is is a good idea84.208.59.120 (talk) 17:41, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Hidden Springs?

If Riverview is in here shouldn't the new store world, Hidden Springs be too? Aiden 17:07, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

It is. Look at The Sims 3#Hidden Springs. We put HS and BB under The Sims 3 Store because users must pay for them. Riverview was put under worlds because it basically came with the game. Zach.vega1 (talk) 17:31, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Non-free images

There are twelve non-free images in this article, including two box arts, three screenshots of cities/landscapes etc., a pointless logo and at least three screenshots that tell the reader nothing that couldn't be explained in text (i.e. we clearly don't need images to show that Sims can go fishing or be astronauts). I will tidy the article soon, but it would probably be best if someone familiar with the article decided which of the landscape photos should stay, for example. Black Kite (t) (c) 00:06, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

We couldn't tell a user how to fish, where to fish, what it looks like to fish, the animations of fishing, just that they can fish. A picture does all of that. I agree with the logo though. We need a screen shot of the store, not a logo. The landscapes show what the town is by showing what it looks like. Zach Vega (talk) 00:14, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
I think you need to go and read WP:NFCC. Just showing the reader "what something looks like" is not enough. The rule of thumb is this; "If I left this image out, would the reader suddenly not understand the article?". So for example, if you left the fishing image out, would the reader suddenly not understand that a Sim can go fishing? No. Similarly, there are three landscapes; you only need one. Twelve non-free images is a major overuse issue; to give you an idea of how much, with 12 non-free images this article would have more non-free images than all but 56 of the 3.5 million articles in Wikipedia. It will also not pass GA in this state. Black Kite (t) (c) 00:20, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
I've taken the number of non-free images from 12 to four. I'm gonna go ahead and remove the banner on top of the article. Zach Vega (talk) 02:56, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
You were almost there - there were five left because you still had the extra box art as well as the one in the infobox. I've removed that one; the only thing I'd do now is make the captions on the remaining images a bit more informational (i.e. on the build one tell the reader exactly what they're seeing and why it's an important part of the game). /* Marketing */ Section

EA's done a lot of work in marketing The Sims 3. This includes: posters, banners, Bus ads, TV ads, a.s.o.

And then for Console versions too: TV ads featuring a human in the Sim world, etc.

Same goes for every expansion pack, as they each included their respected prorating strategies. Aiden 19:51, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

I'm up for this. Should it go to the development section? Zach Vega (talk) 23:06, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Sims 3 for Mobile Phones

It has also been released for mobile phones, such as those running iOS, Bada OS, Windows Phone 7, webOS, Android, Symbian^3, and Nokia N-Gage platforms. A much simpler version is also available for mobile phones with support for the Java platform.

Do we need this?

Perhaps it could be moved to a different section.

Or:

It was also released for mobile phone platforms, and a simpler version for mobiles with Java.

Release

Maybe /* Release */ should be upgraded to a bigger section. As it is a vital stage in the Game's history. So it goes like 'Development > Release > Commercial and Critical Success and Reception' Each with their own == ==.

And the iOS traits table should be moved the appropriate Sims iOS page. Because there isn't any, I would suggest that it be made.

Also: what about a page for each respective console release of the Sims 3, because each of them released differently, got different reception and different marketing. Or maybe simply a collection page for the iOS releases, just as there is one for The Sims 3 Stuff Packs.

Archive

I'm thinking to archive about all but 8 sections above this. What do you think? Aiden 04:22, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Issues found

  • The gameplay section is way too detailed and completely lacks reliable sources. I suggest creating a separate article called "Gameplay of The Sims 3" for a more in-depth description of the gameplay (use The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and World of Warcraft as examples), and leave the section to explain the basics. Also, you should mention the game genre, which is something crucial in a gameplay section. How about starting like this: The Sims 3 is a single-player life simulation game in which the player controls individuals, called Sims, in a similar manner to real life.
  • The article is badly organized. If this is supposed to be the PC version of the game, why does the infobox include other platforms? Why is there a "Traits" subsection (for iOS) in the development section? Why is there a separate article for the console versions that has almost no notability? Why is there info about the first expansion and the DS version in the release subsection, but nothing about the rest? The entire article really needs to be reorganized and recast.
  • The expansion packs, stuff packs, and DLC can be moved to a separate list article called "List of The Sims 3 add-ons", kinda like List of StarCraft media or List of Final Fantasy media.
  • The article doesn't have much on reception. I'm sure that a game like The Sims 3 can have 3 or 4 paragraph of text in that section.
  • All references should make use of Template:Cite web and should list the publish date, publisher, author (if any), title, URL and access date.

In conclusion, there are enough significant issues in the article in that merely placing on hold is not going to do any good, so I am going to fail this GA nomination soon. My suggestions are the following: Keep things simple, fix the article scope and coverage, and fix the basic stuff before expanding it. After that, you may also wish to request a peer review before you re-nominate so that everything is good to go.

This is the first time I review something here at wikipedia. If you have any questions on these points, or if you think I'm being unreasonable, please ask. --Niwi3 (talk) 11:52, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Barnacle Bay and Hidden Springs worlds in The Sims 3 article

I have noticed that Sunset Valley (shipped with the base game) and Riverview (free download from site) has been mentioned in the article, however, with the introduction of Barnacle Bay and Hidden Springs which are The Sims 3 base game worlds, is it wise to add these two in the main article in the worlds section. Feedback is needed. Sundogs Wikia UserPage | Roller Derby Wiki 00:25, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Moodlets

Per WP:GAMEGUIDE, "avoid lists of gameplay weapons, items, or concepts", I'm pretty sure that level of detail is too much for an article. A list of more than a hundred items with no real information falls into WP:FANCRUFT territory as well, which points back to WP:NOT. I suggest removing the moodlets list, and perhaps reconsidering how much of the other details that have been added over time are really necessary. Torchiest talkedits 14:13, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Removal of repeated text and a suggestion to edit text.

(Zeedollz (talk) 09:13, 14 December 2011 (UTC))

Under the Editions and add-ons: 3.3 Stuff Packs: Fast Lane Stuff: Includes (section), the following is repeated and needs to be removed(shown in bold):

It features 12 new vehicles and many new objects and styles of clothing, as well as the Vehicle Enthusiast trait and also enables Sims to have a relationship with their vehicle. With this stuff pack, Sims will be able to develop a relationship with their car.

Also with this particular text I suggest the following edit (shown in bold):

From: It features 12 new vehicles and many new objects and styles of clothing, as well as the Vehicle Enthusiast trait, and also enables Sims to have a relationship with their vehicle.

To: It features 12 new vehicles and many new objects and styles of clothing, as well as the Vehicle Enthusiast trait that enables Sims to have a relationship with their vehicle.

Edit request on 15 December 2011

in the List of Traits there are some mistakes. 1. in the mental column the trait Green Thumb is two times, the second Green Thumb must be replaced by Handy. Done 2. in the column Hidden in the Generations expansion the Lazy trait is two times, one must be deleted. 3. Totaly there are 81 traits and 17 hidden traits not 16

An image used in this article, File:The-Sims-3-Pets-N989 S.jpg, has been nominated for speedy deletion at Wikimedia Commons for the following reason: Copyright violations
What should I do?

Don't panic; deletions can take a little longer at Commons than they do on Wikipedia. This gives you an opportunity to contest the deletion (although please review Commons guidelines before doing so). The best way to contest this form of deletion is by posting on the image talk page.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to upload it to Wikipedia (Commons does not allow fair use)
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale then it cannot be uploaded or used.
  • If the image has already been deleted you may want to try Commons Undeletion Request

Tone of this text

For example, instead of walking your sim and her date inside a restaurant and watching the waiter serve them dinner as they nuzzle each other at the table, as you could in The Sims 2, you now wait outside while getting little text alerts about your sim's activities. This lack of interaction with the city has led many critics to wonder why such emphasis was put on walking around town when there's hardly anything for your sim to really do.

This just seems like a personal opinion. "nuzzle each other"? This should probably be removed. There's no references at all and it seems pointless to have. 92.19.37.144 (talk) 20:39, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

CreatorWiki and SimEditorWiki

CreatorWiki and his/her clone, SimEditorWiki have been making contributions that violate Wiki policy. Rarely are they constructive and they are frequently removed. In general he/she seems to have a poor understanding regarding what can be put in an article. I do not want to violate Wiki policy by edit warring myself. Especially if you're an administrator who has the power to block, please back me on this. I have left a message on their talk page trying to get them to understand WP policy. Those lists they added are inappropriate based on WP:GAMEGUIDE and WP:VGSCOPE. Even after having already explained to them in the past, they never seem to get the message, so I question their motives. - Cadiomals (talk) 19:16, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
