Double meanings in the film's French title

[edit]

I haven't seen this mentioned elsewhere, so I can't include the observation in the article (unless anyone else has spotted an external reference), but it strikes me that the film's original French title – La graine et le mulet – may well refer not just literally to "the grain and the mullet" which are the main ingredients of the hero's (ex-wife's) fish couscous but also to the film's two chief characters, Rym and Slimane, since graine also means "seed" and mulet also means "mule". I find it very hard to believe, given Slimane's conspicuously stubborn nature as portrayed in the film, that the latter pun was not entirely deliberate. -- Picapica (talk) 10:44, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This has been noted by Sylvie Durmelat:

"The polysemous French title, La graine et le mulet (the grain/seed and the mule/mullet), designates fish couscous that is grilled mullet served with steamed grains. It also refers to the two main protagonists: Slimane, the old stubborn mule, or the resilient mullet fish, and Rym, his energetic step daughter, the young seed of the story. "
