Breathtakingly Beautiful
[edit]I just saw this film for the first time (at [1], though that version seems to be missing a minute or two) and it is astonishingly beautiful. Nearly all of the animation in it is rotoscoped, so it is not actually the animation which is incredible but the background artwork (which simply sparkles like so many jewels), the directing and the music. The script and acting are very good as well. I would imagine that the children who watch films like this grow up to be smarter and more observant than those who subsist on sugar-high, substance-free Hollywood fare. Not that it's without its faults, though - the pace slows down somewhat near the ending. Still, this is an excellent example of a particular period in Russian animation history.
