Wasn't there a Poirot story using a similar idea?

- Another appearance is in S. S. Van Dine's The Greene Murder Mystery (1928). That clue is a bit indirect, as the sleuth, Philo Vance, finds an "old two-volume edition of Professor Hans Gross's Handbuch für Untersuchungsrichter als System der Kriminalistik," in which a faked murder attempt is described, and leads to the solution of the case.
- The book is real, as is the author: an english translation titled 'Criminal Investigation: a practical handbook for magistrates, police officers and laywers' was published in 1906, and in it the case of the apparent murder of a grain-merchant, A.M. can be found, with very strong similarities to the Problem of Thor Bridge.
