Who was the real life Mr. Holland and what was his Opus?
[edit]He was my father and I was his Opus. "Grant High" is featured prominently in one of the first scenes. My father taught music there for decades. The entire movie was shot in the very rooms he taught at, at Grant. I was deaf as a complication from mumps but recovered years later.
My father was larger than life, but credit could not be given to him, for the ending had to be changed. He did not put her on a bus headed back east from whence we came (Buffalo, to be exact, and no, he had no other job except in the part-time Oregon Symphony when we arrived). He married her, which lasted over 20 years. The three music director's before him were all fired for fraternization. For my father, they looked the other way. Yes it was called fraternization then, two to five now. Elvis was ok with Lisa, age 14, and Sinatra was ok with Natalie Wood, age 15, so hopefully understand, it was a different time.
