Nearly the entire article is a quote from an introduction, and even that'd difficult to discern from the rest of the article. Can we have some comment from someone who's read the book and can describe it a bit more?

Fair use rationale for Image:LegacyofJihad.jpg

[edit]

Image:LegacyofJihad.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:20, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Breivik

[edit]

Re this revert, the question is whether the fact that the Islamophobia of a high profile terrorist / mass murderer was influenced by this book is notable. Jason, can you comment on this? Oncenawhile (talk) 18:53, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Breivik writes "The Legacy of Jihad by Andrew Bostom should be considered required reading for all those interested in Islam. It is the best and most complete book available on the subject in English, and possibly in any language." That's his review. Our article is about the book The Legacy of Jihad and Breivik has no credentials to make his review worthy of being included in the encyclopedia. Would we include Osama bin Laden's recommendation and review of the Quran? Of course the Breivik article should include secondary sources who talk about his influences. Breivik's reviews of any books, including Mein Kampf, are not reliable sources of information on those works. Jason from nyc (talk) 22:55, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jason, we are talking past each other, from completely different perspectives. I don't think his "review" is relevant. The notable piece is that he was influenced by this book. Bostom's Islamophobic work influenced Breivik's decision to view Islam as "the enemy". To me that is extremely notable. Oncenawhile (talk) 06:53, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that your article [1] is doing the opposite. First of all it was written right after Breivik's attack and it's questionable whether the writer could have read all the books on Breivik's list for his newspaper article. But more importantly the author doesn't talk about Bostom's book. His main point is "...American Right has for years been trying to prove the connection between the Left and Islamists..." which explains why Breivik attacked Leftists and not Islamists. Bostom's book is about Islamic history not any alliance today. Finally the author warns "one should not smear someone by the people who read what they write. Osama bin Laden recommended the writings of William Blum. That did not make Blum a terrorist, or connected to terrorism in any way." And he says this right after the Breivik quote (which seems to be chosen for its reference to Spencer).
Given the author's main point, it suggests that he would be appalled at the suggestion that a history book should be blamed for current actions. Would one blame a history book about the horrors of slavery in antebellum America for Colin Fergusson's attack? Clearly not (although his lawyer tried something like that). History is the past; it's not a exhortation to action. Regardless of whether a history book gets the facts right, it isn't about the present. Philosophy and religion advise action; and there one can suggest a connection. To say someone's book about historical transgressions (even if true) can be responsible for an act of violence is a stretch and this author makes it clear that he wants to avoid such blame.
