Dealing with "Fan's Point of View" Tag
[edit]Hello everyone, I trust that all is well! I wanted to start this talk page to improve this page, and especially deal with the fan perspective tag. I am currently working on a list of secondary sources, so no need to worry about that. Nevertheless, since this tag was added I have deleted much of the information from the body that may have been perceived as "fan information." This only leaves a basic timeline of dates that is easily digestible, only covering major milestones. Additionally, I removed the "In Memory of" portions from the episode section, as I don't think they're fundamental to the understanding of the show. Is this enough? If not, I could also remove the "Silver Bolo Awards" from the episode section; despite them being important to the show, as the whole point of the show is to spread the word about horror and this is honoring people who do that. Yet, I can totally remove them if that would be enough to get rid fo the fan perspective tag. That being said, I will not bend on the actual episode descriptions and their ratings, as those are official descriptions and ratings from the episodes, not my doing. Similarly, I think keeping the guests is a must, as it would be like the Saturday Night Live episode page not having the musical guests from the episodes. In the end, I totally understand wanting this page to be the best it can be, falling in line with Wikipedia guidelines, so I hope that you can all help me with this. If it boils down to the most basic body description, the official drive-in totals with their given ratings (the descriptions of each episode), and guests, I can totally live with that. Anything less and I just don't think this wikipedia page would be of any use to understanding this show. Thank you and I hope you have a great day Moncayk1 01:32, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for starting this discussion Moncayk1. My view is that the article currently reads as if it was written both by a fan and for fans, which is not what an encyclopedia article is for. The episode summaries are too long and the style of them is meaningless for a person who is not familiar with the show (i.e. not a fan - the general public, who this encyclopedia is aimed at). As you have noted elsewhere, this style (" Latin Fu. Fog Fu. Dagger Fu. Pentagram Fu." etc) is the style the show itself uses, but it is not the style generally used on wikipedia, nor the style to be used if the aim of this article is to give an overview for non-fans as to what this topic is about, and to summarise what reliable, independent secondary sources say (rather than what the show says about itself). So I would suggest they need to be completely re-written. If you can find a secondary source that notes that/why this style is used in how the show is talked about, then that could be included, but simply replicating these lists of elements is in itself "fan-point-of-view". - Thank you for taking the time to write back Melcous! Yet, honestly, at this point I think you've become more invested in this than I am, so I am happy to just do whatever you say and move on so that this show can have a clean, tagless page. In that case I think it's best if I just remove the current descriptions altogether and find a better place for them as I see no point in having other descriptions that aren't those or shortening them. This would just leave the movies and bare bones information, which I imagine you'd prefer. At that point I don't think the Wikipedia page will properly display the point of this show as I can assure you people come to this page for those descriptions, but as long as that means no fan tag, sure why not, and I'm still happy for this popular show to at least have a page where people can know dates and see what movies have been covered. Nevertheless, I will gladly just move on from this, remove the descriptions, add the secondary sources, and only update the page when new major dates pop up and films are revealed with their guests. I think that accomplishes the task of making this not done by a fan as you want, sterilizing it, and I can find a better place to host the needed info where people can properly go learn about the show. I will try to get on with that today, but it may take some time, so I hope that's not an issue! Thank you for your guidance in Wikipedia page crafting, it's definitely not something I will forget anytime soon. Moncayk1 22:21, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
- The long descriptions are gone, all that remains are the movies, guests, and Silver Bolo Awards. The movie titles serve as the most basic description for the episodes, linking to the pages of those movies for further details. The guests are comparable to them being listed for Saturday Night Live, crucial to the functionality of the show that given episode. The Silver Bolo Awards are physical real world awards given out by a team of individuals to outstanding sites, individuals, or the like in the horror community. This is partly an awards show, leaving these out would be like any other awards show page, like the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards Wikipedia page, not listing winners. Such pages have Wikipedia editors ready to update at all times, and all I will do is update this format as new episodes air, no other additions what so ever, at my earliest convenience. On top of that, the body of this page has been stripped down to the most basic dates, with all that remains being to swap in secondary sources. Nevertheless, if you have any other issues related to the fan-point-of-view, please bring them here. Thank you. Moncayk1 01:21, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
