Requested move 12 April 2017
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: NOT MOVED. It is moot now since The Far Field (book) has been created since the move request was made, and so now the page couldn't be moved even if we wanted (unless we wanted this album to be the primary topic, which nobody has argued for and which would probably garner little enthusiasm.)
Whether The Far Field (book) should be the primary topic for The Far Field or whether The Far Field should be a disambiguation page listing the book and this album (as it is now) is a separate question. Herostratus (talk) 16:04, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
The Far Field (Future Islands album) → The Far Field – Unnecessary disambiguation. TheKaphox T 11:53, 12 April 2017 (UTC)--Relisting. Yashovardhan (talk) 08:46, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
- This is a contested technical request (permalink). EdJohnston (talk) 12:27, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
- This is also title of a notable work by Theodore Roethke. This may be a WP:TWODAB case, but may need some discussion to clarify primary topic status. older ≠ wiser 12:03, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
- @Bkonrad: Wouldn't a hatnote suffice? As the Roethke anthology doesn't have an article. TheKaphox T 12:06, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
- Possibly, although placing what seems a relatively unknown album as primary topic over a notable work by a major poet may need some discussion. Mistaken links could easily be overlooked. Consider the linkage from the current version of In Evening Air. Uncapitalized, there is also Near and far field.older ≠ wiser 12:13, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
- Not only Roethke's work is more known, the album is named after the poet's work, so the anthology should have priority over the album when disambiguating. Even if Roethke's anthology doesn't have an article, one may be created and would require changing the album articles's title again for disambiguation. It's best that it is disambiguated already. It is true that the In Evening Air album is named after Roethke's poem as well and is not disambiguated, but the album Singles is disambiguated to "Future Islands album" and for consistency, this one and In Evening Air should be too. Wapunguissa (talk) 13:20, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
- There are 16 other albums entitled Singles, so that is why it's disambiguated. Otherwise, it's an irrelevant point. TheKaphox T 13:25, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
- FWIW, the only reason I mentioned In Evening Air is because it contains a mistaken link to The Far Field intended for the Roethke work which would really go unnoticed as a mistaken link. older ≠ wiser 13:32, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
- In addition to the Roethke work and the album and the radio field concept, there is book by Edie Meidav titled The Far Field: A Novel of Ceylon. older ≠ wiser 13:39, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
- And I still defend that an album who is titled after a well known poetry work should be disambiguated as not to be mistaken with the anthology it takes it's name from. Wapunguissa (talk) 12:49, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
Support. This is the only subject of this title that has an article, or more than a mention at any other article. Barring someone creating an article for the Roethke work, there's nothing to disambiguate here that couldn't be done better through a hat note.--Cúchullain t/c 18:44, 18 April 2017 (UTC)- I have created a stub at The Far Field (poem) and would suggest (in line Wapunguissa) that this is probably the primary topic of the term. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:36, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
- MSGJ: That's an especially stubby stub, and I think you've miscalculated. The collection The Far Field is more noteworthy than its title poem, and given the fact that an article on the book could easily cover everything Wikipedia has to say about the poem and much more, it would make sense that it has the article first. However, if someone were to create some real coverage of it, it's true that it would likely be the primary topic vs. the Future Islands album.--Cúchullain t/c 15:01, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
- Considerations of the primary topic should not hinge on whether or not we happen to have an article or what the quality of that article is. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:25, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
- On the contrary, something being covered on Wikipedia is generally a prerequisite to whether we factor it into our disambiguation scheme. Either way, the book The Far Field is the more notable topic than the poem, and is more likely to be expanded.--Cúchullain t/c 15:50, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
- Ok, this has become a mess, so I've created a dab page at Far field (disambiguation). Here are my current recommendations: Move The Far Field (poem) to The Far Field and rewrite it to cover the poetry collection instead of just the poem; it's the more notable topic, and is probably the primary topic of the term "The Far Field". Move The Far Field (Future Islands album) to The Far Field (album) per WP:ALBUMDAB; the artist name isn't necessary. Add a hat note to The Far Field to disambiguate once it moves.--Cúchullain t/c 15:52, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
- Full support to Cuchullain's suggestions above. Sorry I was not aware of the distinction between the book and the poem. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:23, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
- I support Cuchullain's suggestion too, I believe that's the best solution. I've been developing the Future Islands article this week and I've found an interview where the band's frontman states the album is named after the anthology (not the poem), which contains not only the poem The Far Field, but also the poem In Evening Air which named their second album. So apart from the fact that the book should be the primary topic—because it is the most known and the one that lends it's name to the album—creating its article allows to give insight into the origin of both album's name. - Oppose The Far Field refers to the collection of poems, the album is probably named after it. In ictu oculi (talk) 09:14, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
