homoerotic subtext
[edit]"Both Ronda and Renee are strongly attracted to Jeff." Heck, so is Ben (Walter Brennan)! He gets a big kick out of Jeff's companionship, and talks about the ranch they'll have and the cabin they'll live in. (Jeff doesn't disagree with this.) Ben even has a little bell he's going to hang on the door to announce visitors. At the end of the film, when the camera moves in for a close-up of the bell, and Jeff sets it ringing, the effect is heartbreaking. And let's not forget the three times Jeff pulls Ben's pipe from Ben's pocket, lights it, and shoves it in Ben's mouth!
Cowboys (and frontier men) often developed close and lasting friendships, and sometimes lived together in a "bachelor marriage" (though such relationships weren't necessarily sexual). WilliamSommerwerck (talk) 22:19, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
Judge, not "lawman"
[edit]It's a minor point, but the villain in this film is more like a judge than a "lawman" so I changed that in the introduction. He holds "trials" (in the local saloon) and hangs people that he finds "guilty," but he doesn't wear a badge, and he uses his gang members to do the actual enforcement. So I don't think he's a "lawman" in any sense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.93.39.45 (talk) 23:35, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
