[edit]In the movie "The Door in the Floor" Ruth mentions several times the sound. "The sound, of someone trying not to make a sound." Ruth tells her father who is naked and rising from the bed, "Daddy your penis looks funny", to which he responds "My penis is funny." I surmise that he had an erection because he was having sex with the teenage nanny. Thus they were making the sound of someone trying not make any noise.
Otherwise, he could be masterbating, which would fit into the theme of the movie. As a parallel occurance, where the females discover the males masterbating, in seperate instances. As it did happen between Eddie (the male teenage intern) and Marion (Ned's wife). This instance however has more interpersonal sexual connotations, that are absent between the father and daughter.
The book, or maybe some deleted scenes could shed some light on this question.
It could be that I just want someone to spell it out for me?
The summary for this movie needs serious revision...or am I wrong? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.3.136.251 (talk) 21:59, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
... I was hoping to find some discussion of what he found when he went into the door in the floor at the end of the movie - what was down there? (kathimacUV)
Pay close attention to how he describes the door in the floor when he is reading the book as it will be very important in the closing scene... Very clever! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeffgerling (talk • contribs) 20:06, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
- Responding to the above conjecture about Ted sleeping with Alice, the teenage nanny, this is a false conjecture. It's fun to analyze these things and you are using your brain, but at the end of the movie Alice is crying and quits and says she is morally superior to Eddie, Ted's assistant. She says this because she knows Eddie was sleeping with Marion, Ted's wife. Thus, if Alice had also been sleeping with Ted, a married man, she would have been morally "equivilant" to Eddie, the assistant, as they all would have been adulterers. Alice is also shown in one scene leaving a bonfire with a boy, as Eddie was approaching to hit on her. This is further proof she was not making love to Ted. Alice is definately built for speed and her wardrobe and physical assetts are cast perfectly for her role. Alice had great nipples and there were a lot of nipples in this movie. The "Your penis looks funny" remark is early in the film and is simply a concise way of revealing to the viewer a vast amount of characterization in one simple and easy line. It reveals this man is a little eccentric as is his inquisitive daughter. I suspect most men do not reveal their penises to their daughters in that situation. It endears us to Ruth also. The line is also just too good to be left on the cutting room floor. Once the writer wrote it, there was no way he could not put it in the movie. It was also just a great laugh. All penises look funny and they can change shape from minute to minute and be funny from minute to minute for different reasons. Personaly, I do not believe he had an erection at all. He probably just had old nude guy bed penis. I don't believe he was masturbating either. He was gettting action from his models and just didn't seem like that was his deal. I believe it really was a mouse in the wall. It is a little lazy of the writers to use the cliche of Eddie getting caught masturbating by both Ted and Marion to let the viewer know these characters are now aware of Eddie's infatuation. That was a stretch and asked the viewer to suspend disbelief just a little bit too much. I would say the director did have a preference for nipples and masturbation in this movie and those are still open for analysis in the context of this movie.Ozmaweezer (talk) 02:44, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
