Written for television

[edit]

It needs making clear that the TV writers are not the author of this fantasy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.31.72.86 (talk) 03:26, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Already done. If you look at the articles for other episodes this season, like Hardhome#Writing and High Sparrow#Writing, they all have a paragraph stating that the ep contains a lot of original material not directly based on Martin's books. This article now has one too, and I plan to expand it after more third-party sources become available. Darkfrog24 (talk) 04:02, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Daenerys was preparing for her death, or did she summon Drogon?

[edit]

In the In Meereen section, the text about Drogon coming to rescue Daenerys currently states, "Daenerys takes Missandei's hand and closes her eyes, seemingly accepting her fate, when Drogon is heard roaring nearby." I don't think that the "seemingly accepting her fate" part is accurate; I took that moment as her summoning Drogon. And as seen by this Vanity Fair source, this Slate source, this Paste, this The Daily News New York source, this The Plain Dealer source, and this Yahoo! Celebrity source, so did others. By contrast, this The News Herald (Panama City) source states, "Seeing the numbers in the Sons of the Harpy’s favor, Daenerys takes hold of personal assistant Missandei’s hand and either prepares for her death or telepathically summons Drogon to her aid." Given that there are more sources interpreting the moment as her summoning Drogon than there are sources interpreting the moment as her preparing for her death (yes, go ahead and Google it for confirmation like did), I think that the "seemingly accepting her fate, when Drogon is heard roaring nearby" text should state "seemingly summoning Drogon; moments later, Drogon is heard roaring nearby." Or something like that. And we should then add two references beside it. Alternatively for that section, we could add a type of "either summoning Drogon or accepting her fate" wording, or not mention either, and leave the Critical reception section to note it and go into detail about it. I didn't see it as accepting death either. I saw it as just holding a friend's hand in a tough time, like "hold onto me so we can stay together while we escape." However, given the sources that Flyer has presented here, I think that "either preparing for death or telepathically summoning Drogon" would be the best text for the article at this time. Exactly. If you saw this edit to my post, I changed the order, though; I think that the summoning part should be noted first. Flyer22 (talk) 19:59, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Further tweak to that post is here, since I obviously left out a word. Flyer22 (talk) 20:01, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
When Daenerys took Missandei's hand, I did think of that as a "we will be together when we die" thing (and that might have been Daenerys's original intention), but as soon as Daenerys closed her eyes, I knew (in other words, "interpreted") that Daenerys was summoning Drogon (and I was expecting him to appear anyway because I did not believe for a second that Daenerys was about to die). Flyer22 (talk) 20:11, 8 June 2015‎ (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, going by poster Eric Nox in the comments section of this HitFix source, "Sorry folks - If you watch HBO's inside the episode segment, they specifically discuss that she closes her eyes to gain some peace as she accepts her fate that she's going to die. I do think drogon sensed her but she also wasn't purposefully calling him (as I also originally suspected)." So given the interpretation aspect of this scene, I think we should definitely mention in the Critical reception section that whereas many viewers (or just specifically critics if we only have the sources for that) interpreted it as Daenerys summoning Drogon, others interpreted it as her accepting her fate (if we can find other sources with the "fate" opinion), and that the creators intended it as an "accepting her fate" moment. Flyer22 (talk) 20:31, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I can get behind that. Darkfrog24 (talk) 21:58, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think it is worth considering that she accidentally summoned Drogon; I mean, putting aside whatever the creators intended, it's valid to think that she might have been accepting her fate and simultaneously thinking of Drogon and/or his siblings helping her out. She did look a bit surprised when Drogon appeared, but I interpreted that as her initially having a little doubt that he would show up, given her relationship with Drogon and his siblings as of late. Flyer22 (talk) 22:12, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That would be very cool and very consistent with the Warg stuff from the books (mostly what the Stark kids do with those wolves, in Arya's case even from a continent away), but we should stick to what the secondary sources actually say. If enough fans ask, maybe Martin or Benoiff or Weiss will say something in an interview. Darkfrog24 (talk) 01:12, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Final appearance

[edit]

According to IMDb, this is also the final appearance of Kerry Ingram (Shireen Baratheon). Renard Migrant (talk) 13:31, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
