GeoHack

[edit]

Does anyone know how to add the GeoHack tag? I know the coordinates should be 34.040461, -118.2242 but I don't know how to have it added to the page. Thanks! BT14 (talk) 04:58, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Answered it halfway, now hopefully it shows up in google earth correctly! BT14 (talk) 05:08, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I believe you use this template.Falcon8765 (talk) 20:37, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

John C.'s Nickname "The Professor"

[edit]

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't John Cohn at least twice referred to as "The Professor"? In "A Stranger Among Us", one of the ladies mentioned him to the two strangers, and then Michael talked about him in his video diary in "A Test of Faith", referring to the nickname. Perhaps that could be added? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 164.113.135.12 (talk) 17:02, 3 September 2009 (UTC) He was definitely referred to as 'The professor', I will add it as a note in his profile paragraph. Blacksmith (talk) 08:56, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This should not be interpreted as official commentary, but- The first person noted to call him “Professor” (actually “the professor”) was Mike, in what seemed to be a slightly less-than-respectful manner in the second episode. (There may have been an earlier iteration I missed.)97.120.235.112 (talk) 21:26, 18 December 2009 (UTC)A REDDSON[reply]

Mike always seemed to have immense respect for John Cohn. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.202.113.201 (talk) 09:34, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

His tone of voice seemed less that respectful; But yes, later on he showed a very clear and measurable change in tone and attitude towards John (and everyone it seems). I am no more psychic than anyone else reading this, so I can’t read his mind and know his true feelings, I can only measure against tone of voice, intonation, etc. A REDDSON — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.5.201.168 (talk) 19:54, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Diane Cohn

[edit]

We need to add some information for Diane Cohn. So far I have: Age, 49 Occupation, Electronics Engineer (from the show). Any other info been scavenged yet? I checked the Discovery site, no luck. Blacksmith (talk) 05:25, 11 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

A lot of the Cast section is very similar to content from Reality TV World. For example:

  • RTV: In 2006, John and his wife Diane's 14 year old son, Sam, was killed in a traffic accident. Since then, John has dedicated all of his education outreach work to Sam's memory.
  • Wiki: In 2006, John's 14 year old son, Sam, was killed in a traffic accident. Since then, John has dedicated all of his education outreach work to Sam's memory.

This content should be rephrased and property cited where applicable. tktktk 17:31, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Production

[edit]

Perhaps we should add some details on production, there is a Q&A here http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/colony/q-and-a/thom-beers.html Blacksmith (talk) 20:30, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

End?

[edit]

Does anyone know if they are doing a new season in a new area with a new cast, or is it over for good?

They've started advertising a new season to begin on July 27th. I regret that I don't know enough about making larger changes here; is there someone with more experience who knows how to make the mods for having two seasons? if someone can break it into steps, I'm willing to help. Krilia (talk) 13:35, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
From the Facebook page [1] they are definately starting with a new cast. Kalleguld (talk) 08:15, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Real or not?

[edit]

There seems to be considerable controversy around the internet over to what extent the show was scripted and/or staged. Many seem convinced that it was entirely scripted with nothing but actors and staged scenes plus a minimum of "improv" by the cast. One frequent criticism is that the show often seems to depict the "survivors" doing incredibly dangerous, potentially life-threatening things that the show's producers would surely never allow for liability reasons. There's also the fact that the show employed stunt coordinators, which some people take as evidence that at least some of the things depicted in the series were scripted and staged. The Discovery Channel maintains that it was mostly unscripted. Maybe some mention of the controversy belongs in the article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.227.127.138 (talk) 18:16, 13 October 2009 (UTC) I think there is some answers in the Q+A I linked to, it was mentioned that the cast were advised of potential hazards at all time, ie, they told them if they thought something bad would happen, the stunt coordinatators were probably for the stunts performed by outsiders, ie, the marauders etc. My understanding from the Q+A is that it is as realistic as possible while being in a controlled environment. 125.238.162.226 (talk) 10:51, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I've made a sizable amount of changes to this article, and I hope they are satisfactory in that they do not violate any standards or policy. I do not, however, see fault or harm in removing their age, date of birth, current residentual province, or location of birth. That information shouldn't have any cognizable claims to it, as it is a free source intended for everyone. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fruit.Smoothie (talkcontribs) 03:35, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your efforts to restore this, but unfortunately some of what you put in is also a copyright violation. Take, for example, "Over the years, Allison's assignments as a traveling nurse have led to the opportunity to both work and explore living in cities such as Manhattan, Miami, Los Angeles, and Honolulu" from the source. You wrote "Over the years, Allison's assignments as a traveling nurse have led to the opportunity to both work and explore living in cities such as Manhattan, Miami, Los Angeles, and Honolulu." While this is a good rewrite--"She is believed to have been interested in marine biology while she was a child vacationing in the Caribbean."--some other passages are too closely paraphrased from the source: "He is an inventor who fabricates, crafts, and builds furniture from both wood and metal, customizes cars and bikes, installs solar panels, and is specialized in security-designing." is up until its ending only superficially altered from the source's "He is an inventor who fabricates furniture from both wood and metal, customizes cars and bikes, installs solar panels, and makes bows and arrows from scrap metal." (Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing has some suggestions for how to rewrite completely.) I've removed material that either directly duplicates or follows too closely on the source to meet the requirements of Wikipedia:Copyrights. If you want to incorporate it, please rewrite it completely, which requires more than adding or altering a few words. The facts are not copyrightable, but the way that they are presented is. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:24, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Australian reality series of same name?

[edit]

I'm surprised there is absolutely noomention of the Australian-based reality series of the same name (from 2005). I always assumed this show was "inspired" by that one, even though the subject matter is very different (Colonial Australia rather than post-apocalypse America). I don't know a lot about it, but I was confused that Wikipedia doesn't have any reference at all to the Aussie show, even if it IS totally unrelated. Can someone who knows more about this show maybe add a placeholder page or just a mention on the disambiguation page? Banjo oz (talk) 23:55, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Right this moment it looks like a Catch-22 situation. On one side we do not know if this series was inspired by the Australian version, so that cannot be said as a way to note it. Since this article is fully dedicated the the United States TV series episodes, throwing that information in at random will possibly not fit so well and could get reverted. On the other side, without an article for that show first being created, a disambig page is not allowed, and the only alternative which are "See Also" or "Other Uses" red links should not exist on article pages. Right now I'm not sure what can be done other than the note in this article reminding others that it does exist. That may inspire someone to create it. — CobraWiki ( jabber | stuff ) 18:40, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've moved this series to have 2009 in the title, to allow room for The Colony (2005 TV series). It is also linked from the disambig page. -- Bovineone (talk) 23:01, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would imagine that few know of any Australian-based series of the same name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.202.113.201 (talk) 09:37, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ideas to redesign article more fitting for two seasons?

[edit]

The article right now is very one-season stylized. There are 13 sections talking about the single season. Estimate the same for season two and that's 26 plus another two to separate as "Season One" and "Season Two". That is quite a TOC for only two seasons. Over the next week, are there any ideas on how to trim down or reorganize the current information? It would help to keep the page from running amok. — CobraWiki ( jabber | stuff ) 18:27, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps move all of the season 1 details to a new article, and prepare a placeholder for the upcoming season2? -- Bovineone (talk) 23:33, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was going to suggest a separate "List of Episodes" page like you see on most other pages for t.v. shows, where season one and two, and any more to come in the future, could all be listed together. The link could be placed next to the episode count in the info box.--MetallichickX (talk) 08:25, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
At the same time, it would make sense to have the top-level article for the U.S. version be The_Colony_(U.S._TV_series) and, for symmetry, rename The_Colony_(2005_TV_series) to The_Colony_(Australian_TV_series) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Coreyob (talkcontribs) 00:32, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've created The_Colony_(U.S._TV_series)_season_2 and would suggest that the majority of this article become The_Colony_(U.S._TV_series)_season_1. The parts of this article applying to both seasons, should be placed in The_Colony_(U.S._TV_series) along with the disambiguation for the Australian version. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Coreyob (talkcontribs) 01:35, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've moved the old article to "season 1" in order to preserve the edit history, and a new (mostly empty) article has been created in its place for the entire series, The Colony (U.S. TV series). -- Bovineone (talk) 22:38, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
