References to New York on Newspapers.com
[edit]I spent some time today tracking down early references to NYC as the/a "city that never sleeps" on Newspapers.com, and wanted to preserve that research somewhere for future editors. These all predate the 1912 Fort Wayne News usage that is often credited with being the first to use the term.
- Feb 1872 Carlisle Weekly Herald: "...for there is no such thing as rest in New York. The city never sleeps."
- Jan 1884 Eutaw Whig and Observer: "New York has four elevated double-track railroads... and they are crowded to standing room, all of them, night and day. The city never sleep all at night."
- Dec 1891 Pittsburgh Post Gazette: "Does the great metropolis ever sleep?... No, the great city never sleeps;"
- Feb 1901 Brooklyn Citizen: "We should have a devotion for our city that never sleeps."
- June 1901 Passaic Daily News: "New York and Brooklyn, where 7,000, policemen, working a solidly built city that never sleeps."
- May 1905 Buffalo Evening News: "The promoters of the bank... in that portion of the city which never sleeps"
- July 1906 Buffalo Enquirer: "New York has become a city that never sleeps."
- Dec 1906 Niagara Times: "In... New York... more than 100,00 men work all night. So the city never sleeps."
- Dec 1906 Boston Evening Transcript: "New York city never sleeps. It often dozes off a few minutes...
- Aug 1907 Arizona Republic: "New York is deserving... the title of 'the city that never sleeps'..." (article republished widely, Barry Popik credits it to a paper in Macon, GA, but that was published 3 days later)
Wikipedia generally doesn't want to use primary sources, but if another editor feels up to it, this could be refined into the article. Newspapers.com accounts are available from Wikipedia Library. Patrick Neil, oѺ∞/Talk 17:38, 7 June 2022 (UTC)
Ottawa, Ontario Canada
[edit]Ottawa should be taken off the list & replaced with Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, because Ottawa is not a city that never sleeps as businesses & government shutdown for the day during the week, the downtown core effectively comes to a close. 107.190.70.111 (talk) 21:06, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
