[edit]Shall we mention anarthrous prenominal modifiers for variety's sake (Messrs Rickett and Thomson)? That apart, The Times report hyphenates both the incidences of "first-rate". I can't work out why you link from the notes here to the article on the relevant paper at every mention (four links to The Observer, three to The Manchester Guardian) but it doesn't appear to breach any MoS rule, so to each his own.

In my mind, those references could be looked at in any order so linking the work each time seems like a simple courtesy to our readers who don't then have to hunt back through the refs to find the one that is linked.
