Plot summary and evaluation

[edit]

I have added a plot summary and source for this novel by William Boyd.

Out of all his novels I have read so far, I believe it to be one of his less successful. The plot, although historically interesting, is not as gripping as in some of his other books and the plot somewhat flawed (for example, the reasoning behind the arrest of Salvador Carriscant by Paton Bobby). Some passages also seem rather over-descriptive in literary style. The NYT review puts this rather well: <snip non-free content>

I agree wholeheartedly that the book is still well worth a read and a lot better than most of the contemporary literary rubbish sold in bookshops nowadays. Ivankinsman 19:34, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
