Not much here for the moment. I intend/hope to say more about the individual books in the future. I hope my comment about "ghastly dark humor" preserves NPOV; I think anyone who likes or dislikes McMurtey's writing would accept that description.

I think "a sort of" is an unneeded weakening qualification. One can simultaneously enjoy McMurtry's writing and be appalled at the way he gratuitously tortures his characters (eg, having Doobie Plunkert raped the by sheriff, then committing suicide with rat poison). Ever read Horseman, Pass By? Hud doesn't just let his father die -- he murders the old man with a .22. McMurtry certainly knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men.
