Radio mention

[edit]

Someone has requested citation regarding mention of the basketweave on the radio. I can't find any traffic report transcripts online (and I doubt they exist), but I have found a few sources that mention it, including radio station websites:

I'm surprised that someone who lives in Toronto has never heard this on the radio - I hear it at least once a week, and I rarely listen to the radio. Mindmatrix 21:15, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not only that, but the MTO uses "The Basketweave" on their own COMPASS cameras and uses the phrase on their central region traffic reports as a waypoint when describing where an incident has occured. Snickerdo 20:13, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Suggest renaming to Basketweave (highway)

[edit]

I'd like to suggest renaming this article Basketweave (highway). A "basketweave" is the name for a type of highway feature; it is not the name of a specific site in Toronto. In fact, there are other basketweaves, as this article itself suggests.

Yes, radio traffic types will say "traffic is backed up east of the basketweave", but they only do this in the same way they'd say "traffic is backed up east of the traffic circle".

I don't know if there's a way of internationalizing this article (I assume they must have basketweaves in other countries, just named something different), but fer cripes sake let's at least make the article less Toronto-centric!

Do you have a reliable source for a place that is as well known as this as The Basketweave? "The Basketweave" is actually a specific section of the 401 and is most often referred to by that name. There are other places that have similar characteristics and can be similarly called basketweaves but this is the WP:PRIMARYUSAGE. One might very well speak of a traffic back-up ahead of a traffic circle but you would have to be more specific. This is The Basketweave. If one can write a reliably-sourced article on basketweaves as a highway feature, then go ahead and do so, it would make a fine stand alone article but would not require the moving or merging of this article. Though I agree with you, if an article such as Basketweave (highway) existed, I would support moving the section Other Basketweaves from this article into the new one. Mindmatrix 00:43, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No, "The Basketweave" is not a specific section of the 401. A "basketweave" is a feature of the 401 at that location, similar to how the Wilson Street "traffic circle" in Ancaster is a feature and not a location. Or how the Hwy 403 Hamilton "truck climbing lane" is a feature and not a location. Or how the King Street Bridge over Hwy 403 in Hamilton is a feature and not a location. Or how the transfer lanes 1.7 km east of the Rouge River are a feature and not a location. We won't be seeing articles on any of those any time soon; similar to how we don't have an article on the Humber hump.
I guess you could rename this article as "The Highway 401 basketweave in Toronto", except there's pretty much no notability attached to it - aside from being a feature of the 401 at that location.
One can write a reasonably sourced article on basketweaves, but not one on this specific location, as the paucity of sources proves. "The basketweave" isn't even its legal name - go ask the MTO to see if they have a legal name for that location. It's only a way to refer to a feature at that location. It definitely is a unique feature of Highway 401. Its labelled accordingly on several maps (including my Mapart Golden Horseshoe map), its "THE BASKETWEAVE" on the compass cameras (but this name does not appear at the other 2 and soon to be 3 basketweaves in the area). I would happily support creating a more globalized article, but only if its merged with this one. There's nothing in this article that earns it a separate article from the concept of basketweaves.... However, regardless, this structure on Highway 401 is named "The Basketweave", as it was the first. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 16:37, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Speed Limit Correction

[edit]

The speed limit is not 80 km/h in the Basketweave. 80 km/h is in yellow, which is a speed suggestion for hazardous conditions, the speedlimit itself remains at 100 km/h. If you were pulled over by a police officer in this section of highway driving 136 km/h you would only be 36 km/h over the limit, not 56 km/h which would be the difference between the impounding of your automobile in the Province of Ontario. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.54.100.210 (talk) 14:07, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
