I recall a column by Ian Aitken in The Guardian in the 1980s or 90s, in which he deplored "Flower of Scotland" as a dirge celebrating a defeat, and said that "The Ball of Kirriemuir" would be a much better Scottish anthem (good tune, everyone knows the words).
