Table totals
[edit]I have just updated the table so that the total includes incidents from 2016 and after. Is there a way to code the table so it carries out this sum automatically rather than having to change the totals manually in the future? VehementurInhorrui (talk) 10:58, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
Expand
[edit]Can we make this a main article that summarises and refers to essentially all the other articles within this category. Thanks AndrewRT(Talk) 14:18, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
- Definitely the thing thing to do, someone just needs to do it. KazakhPol 00:14, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Merge with List of terrorist incidents
[edit]Could that page be merged with this one to provide more comprehensive coverage Ms medusa 23:10, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, that's a good idea. Please remember to sign your posts with four tildes (~). KazakhPol 18:24, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry about that - my computer has decided to go all american on me so instead of a tilde I get a | - but now I have one to copy and paste :) Ms medusa 23:10, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I concur, but the incidents page should be merged with this one, this title is more encyclopedic, and a list of incidents should be part of this Aaliyah Stevens 14:38, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose because between 1968 1992 10,000 explosions in Northern Ireland alone,(De Baróid, Ciarán (2000). Ballymurphy And The Irish War. Pluto Press. pp. p. 325. ISBN 0-7453-1509-7.

has extra text (help)) and that does not include the shooting incidents which were probably even more frequent. So a single article can not possible be a comprehensive List of terrorist incidents in the United Kingdom --Philip Baird Shearer 09:07, 8 November 2007 (UTC) - Support. Having just found this article I would have to comment that this article as it is, covering mainly post 9/11 islamic extremist terrorism, seriously verges on POV pushing. The almost complete lack of a mention of over 30 years of troubles related to Northern Ireland, together with a complete lack of a mention of pre 9/11 islamic terrorism, and various other crops of attacks perpertrated by extremist nationalists, not to mention more historical incidents in favour of a handful of failed attacks from Islamic extremists in the last couple of years is a serious and gaping hole. At that point I feel that some sort of merger is in order, if only to give Northern Ireland a greater prominence. Pit-yacker (talk) 18:32, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

- Thanks for your work on this. The article "Terrorism in the United Kingdom" should be primarily about the history of actual terrorist incidents and conspiracies and secondly about anti-terrorism laws, and criticism thereof. What you are referring to as criticism is not criticism of terrorism as such but criticism of anti-terrorism laws, and some of this may be better included elsewhere, with just a short reference here and a
{{main}}
template reference. AndrewRT(Talk) 18:32, 16 February 2007 (UTC) - No... it wouldnt. This is exactly the right place for such content, unless you are suggesting creating a page on Counter-terrorism in the United Kingdom. 'Terrorism' is a subject that encompasses counter-terrorism, anti-terrorism, legislation on free speech and security, et cetera. KazakhPol 23:12, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Misc
[edit]About how to organize the whole (big) subject, the title "Terrorism in the United Kingdom" is ambiguous. I presume it means terrorism against the British, but it could also refer to terrorism against others by terrorists based in the UK; in the latter group are the whole Londonistan cast who are wanted on terrorism charges in other places but who still operate freely under official British protection. The UK is the most terrorist-friendly nation in Europe, if not the whole world.
Seriously, if the writers here get sidelined by fatwas from Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and the Guardian, the article will never get anywhere. LDH 04:02, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
- Surely the simple thing would be to define the article as Terrorist acts within the United Kingdom. A separate article on Terrorist organisations based in the UK could be created. Regan123 18:02, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
A section on state terrorism in the UK would be great. I'm thinking mostly of the 1920s, when it was at it's most blatant. Lapsed Pacifist (talk) 16:07, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
POV
[edit]The statement that the "British state and its security forces took part in terrorism in Northern Ireland" is POV and biased. There was no official policy of terrorism.Royalcourtier (talk) 08:19, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- While some members of the security service undoubtedly did take part in acts of terrorism, there is a singular lack of evidence that any of it was state-sanctioned. Nick Cooper (talk) 11:29, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Perhaps a more balanced statement such as "The British security forces in Northern Ireland colluded with paramillitary groups that carried out terrorist attacks during the troubles" would be better?. --MJLRGS (talk) 13:16, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
I don't think it's a factually incorrect statement, except that it seems to suggest that ALL security forces and the ENTIRE British state took part in terrorism. I somehow don't think that's true. I think the majority of the British cabinet of the time would have opposed it if they knew. So at least in this regard I think it should be ammended. 217.23.12.229 (talk) 00:36, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

Mistakes in the map
[edit]I was a bit taken aback to see on the map that there have apparently at some point been terrorist attacks on Mull, in Oban and in Inverness, so did some checking of the database which has been used to compile it and found a few inaccuracies in its listings for Scotland (https://www.start.umd.edu/gtd/search/Results.aspx?search=scotland&sa.x=0&sa.y=0). Here are two examples:
Attack listed as 197603110001 - this was the murder of Harry Scott, which took place in West Belfast, Northern Ireland, as can be seen in this newspaper article: http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/man-convicted-of-1976-ira-pub-murder-fails-to-have-verdict-overturned-35308925.html
Attack listed as 199206080003 - this took place in New Scotland Yard, which of course is in London.
Attacks are also listed as having occurred in Rawalpindi and Paris. I'm not sure how these come to appear on a list of terrorist incidents in Scotland.
The incident numbered 198105090001 took place not at Inverness, but at the Sullom Voe oil terminal on Shetland. (See this report: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/day-ira-tried-bomb-queen-7720396) I can't see anything at all for Mull or Oban, so maybe the red dots could be removed from there? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.19.180.169 (talk) 06:23, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
Table
[edit]Why does the table falsely state that there were no terrorist incidents in the UK in 1993? The 1993 Bishopsgate bombing was one such attack that year. Jim Michael (talk) 10:04, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
April 2020 Home Office report?
[edit]The Times are writing about a Home Office report which mentions that there are 43 thousand suspects in the UK. Does anyone have a link to the report itself rather than The Times? See https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/terrorism-in-the-uk-number-of-suspects-tops-40-000-after-mi5-rechecks-its-list-pqm6k62ph A Thousand Words (talk) 10:45, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
Long list of Islamist orgs - most with zero connection to UK
[edit]Wholly unexplained and contextless, there is a long list of Islamist orgs - most of which seem to have no connection at all to the UK, no presence there and which have never perpetrated, or attempted to perpetrate any acts there. Why is it there? This is akin to listing every left-wing terrorist worldwide, because left-wing terrorist acts have occurred in the UK. How is it helpful to understanding acts in the UK to know about Aden-Abyan Islamic Army for example? Pincrete (talk) 04:22, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- Although not clear from the sub-section, they are described as "Organisations the government has designated as terrorist and banned" in the main part of the section at Terrorism in the United Kingdom#Organisations. I have previously removed some entries (Animal Liberation Front and Kurdistan Freedom Hawks) from the section that were not actually designated, I have not checked every entry though.
