Semi-protection, and vandalism

[edit]

The article has recently been repeatedly vandalized by somebody who uses various Indian IP numbers. I have therefore semi-protected it.

If anybody (from India or anywhere else) thinks that removal of the external links that are now listed at the foot of the article -- namely

-- is not vandalism and would like to argue this in a lucid and persuasive way, he or she is free to do so, right here on this talk page. If that person obtains agreement, then the links can go. As long as there is no agreement, then removal of the links will be treated as vandalism. -- Hoary (talk) 15:31, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Identity of the vandal

[edit]

The vandalizing is obviously done by Tengatango.com. Tengatango does not only vandalise , he also has very bad business practise by hijacking competitors threads and badmouthing them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.186.18.237 (talk) 05:20, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is not a coincidence that tengatango’s IP address and the vandal’s IP address are the same (124.253.8x.xxx). Tengatango is, by the way, not affiliated with TENGA Co., Ltd. Tengatango tries to act as an official distributor, but is not. added in these edits on 3 March 2009 by User:89.236.15.229 (contributions)

Overview

[edit]

The overview reads like an advertisement rather than an encyclopedia article.

Biased

[edit]

As of August 16th, this entire article is a giant load of bias. Whole thing either needs deleted, or cleaned up majorly.

Ggccg (talk) 04:46, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sourcing (none)

[edit]

The article currently has a grand total of zero sources independent of the company that makes the product. -- Hoary (talk) 00:18, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Delete it

[edit]

This is not an article, its poor attempt at a putting a Tenga catalog on wikipedia. 143.85.199.242 (talk) 18:40, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I hope my recent edits made it better. --朝彦 (Asahiko) (talk) 15:44, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tenga USA

[edit]

I have reverted an edit by 99.7.236.56 (talk) (whose edits so far has been to repeatedly add an external link to Tenga USA), because there are so many Tenga dealers out there and it is not the purpose of Wikipedia to maintain a list of dealers. AFAIK, Tenga USA does not mention anything about connections with Tenga Co. Ltd. (in Japan) except for its name [1], and it isn't even listed on Tenga Co. Ltd.'s distributor list [2]. I wouldn't call that a "Tenga official site" which the user's edit claims to be. --125.204.82.37 (talk) 12:04, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Tenga-usa.com will waste no more of our time. (And before other dealers get ideas: the spam blacklist already has numerous instances of the string "tenga", but plenty more can easily be added.) -- Hoary (talk) 01:03, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Maybe we can delete the external links section altogether if the spammers persist. We already have a link in the infobox so it would not be a loss of information. --朝彦 (Asahiko) (talk) 02:47, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Notability criteria (self-)check

[edit]

I'm going to self-check the current article against the notability criteria, and at the same time, I will leave the following as a memorandum to give non-Japanese speakers an idea about what's in those references.

(This article has long suffered from insufficient sourcing because there are few reliable English sources available. You had to look at Japanese sources.)

  1. Book Tenga-Ron (Tengalogy): A whole book dedicated to the subject but I do not treat this book as an independent source. It's mentioned in the official website and Tenga Co. was clearly involved.[3] Might be good for further reading though.
  2. Book 30 Year's History of Sex Media: A book on telephone sex (Ch.1), dating sites (Ch.2), adult books (Ch.3), adult video sites (Ch.4), masturbators and modern love dolls (ch.5), and sex industry (ch.6). One half of chapter 5 discusses masurbators, especially (or almost exclusively) Tenga.
  3. Two independent academic papers featuring usage of Tenga in clinical purposes
  4. Some newspapers and tabloids (might contain sponsored articles... can't tell, but it's unlikely that all of them are.)
  5. Press release (does not count as secondary source)

Plus the fact that a product received a design award and was nominated for another, and that it was made into a manga by Sony. (You saw this coming. Only in Japan.) Enough to establish notability? --朝彦 (Asahiko) (talk) 08:29, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Get rid of the video

[edit]

Its relevance is marginal, as it shows a man masturbating from beginning to end using the product only part of the time. It is basically gratuitous porn and isn't necessary or helpful to the article.2600:1015:B123:DEBE:411F:CA96:8E2B:8618 (talk) 04:26, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Since no one objected, I went ahead and got rid of it. I just unlinked it from the article though, the file presumably still exists. 2600:1015:B123:DEBE:5177:1B04:FDA2:75D1 (talk) 05:25, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I am bot contributing much to the en-Wikipedia so I just noticed this discussion. The removal of the video is censorship which is not allowed on Wikipedia. This video is very relevant because it shows how the product that is described works. Alice2Alice (talk) 13:28, 10 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Video is back up and still just porn.

[edit]

I'm not sure when the video of the man was re-linked. As stated below it adds little to nothing to the article, and shows a man ejaculating WITHOUT the toy. I am removing the video again. Whoami505 (talk) 05:35, 9 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have reinstated it as Wikipedia is not censored. 2601:642:4400:9F00:A834:462E:7F53:4EE5 (talk) 05:36, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The video has no benefit to the article, I second the motion towards deletion. The person calling this "censorship" should probably look the meaning up in a dictionary. Ninucs (talk) 15:23, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Benefit of having the masturbation video

[edit]

Hi, I'd like to start a insightful discussion about the merit of having a masturbation video as content of the page. The previous two delete-revert cycles should not be repeated. Ninucs (talk) 15:41, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is your user name a real user name? I saw that WP has no page for your user name so I don't know what to think. Sex Ed is just the same information as providing information about adult products. We've all heard about these sexual health things before in school, I'm sure. 2601:642:4400:9F00:5CA0:859B:BCF0:5A78 (talk) 17:09, 21 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How is my user account relevant to the discussion? You are not even using one to comment. I don't see the point you are trying to make.
The video shown is of no relevance, not educational, and pornographic. Ninucs (talk) 07:53, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I third this motion. If we need a consensus to remove this video, then we should work toward building that and restore order. Removing this video simply because it is obscene might constitute censorship. However, removing it because of its minimal relevance, distracting presence in the article, unprofessional nature, and lack of educational benefit does not, even though the video is also obscene. The Japanese language version of this article, despite its other problems, does seem to be informative about the topic to the same extent a typical sex toy article is without including a gratuitous video. Ipsedixi (talk) 19:14, 28 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Per WP:offensive material
"Material that could be considered vulgar, obscene, or offensive should not be included unless it is treated in an encyclopedic manner. Offensive material should be used only if its omission would cause the article to be less informative, relevant, or accurate, and no equally suitable alternative is available."
Seems like this fits this situation. Ipsedixi (talk) 22:12, 29 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
