Summary
Have added some more detail to this article, but needs to be tidier/fuller. Possibile ideas:
- Does not apply to... marketing calls - any evidence that this get used as a loophole?
- adding section/link on "Slient Calls"?
- Adding company viewpoint, list cleaning, does it help stop wasted calls, do the 'easily sold to' register as they find it hard to say no?
- problem of lodging complaint - mention TPS to any UK telemarketer, and they hang up. 1471 gives 'number withheld'.
I also recall an old article pointing out that despite many complaints, no company has even been fined under these regulations, which is interesting, but I didn't put it in as could not find a source which confirmed or denied this. (was old bbc article, iirc)

do you have to be with BT to get on the TPS, or can NTL customers use it too?
I'm on Virgin and have it. ANYONE can. Incidentally, I seem to recall a similar scheme in America being shot down, something to do with it breaching the constitutional rights of the companies, maybe some additional section for links to other countries' similar schemes?
As at the 28 December ...
Does not state the year. Left as it is, the natural assumption would be 2005, as the previous statistic is for November 2005. However, 4 million people signing up in a month seems unlikely, so the statement may refer to 'last' December, i.e. 2007. In either case, it should explicitly state the year as the former may no longer be accurate if the page is restructured, and the latter will no longer be accurate after December 2008. Non-genuine Market Research Calls
I am a TPS member who received a direct marketing call disguised as market research. I was told it was market research but it consisted only of filters to determined what I might want followed by asking if I wanted to buy X from Y or Give Money to A,B or C.
I complained via the TPS web site and I ticked the Market Research Option for type of call. I received an automated reply telling me:
The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) aims to reduce live "direct marketing" calls and is unable to stop calls from organisations who are conducting research. Research calls are not deemed as direct marketing as they generally relate to information gathering or seeking of opinions whereas the purpose of a direct marketing call would be to sell or market a product or service.

Mobile Phones
The TPS allows you to register Mobile Phones however no mention of this is made in the article or what TPS means for mobile users - see TPS FAQ for what it does mean with regard calls and SMS texts. Cookieonwiki (talk) 21:34, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
Use of term Telesales or Telemarketing
Should the article use Telesales or Telemarketing as according to Wiki telesales is the UK term for telemarketing and TPS is a UK only service? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cookieonwiki (talk • contribs) 22:01, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
Impact of Call Screening and TPS on Telemarketing
As part of moving house/phone providers people often get registered for TPS by their providers resulting in an ever increasing take up. According to some in the industry this along with call screening has impacted on Telemarketing. Cookieonwiki (talk) 22:27, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
Updated Membership Numbers of TPS
It should be possible to obtain latest membership figures for TPS via a Freedom of Information Request to Ofcom. I would suggest doing this via WhatDoTheyKnow to provide an online reference and ask for a breakdown between mobile and landlines.
To enhance the article more you could ask for historic figures for each year to show the trend. Also ask for number of complaints made to TPS each year. Finally figures from Ofcom for the total number of residential landlines in the UK and total number of mobiles - some figures are on the Ofcom site however it would be nice for any figures to match those for TPS membership by requesting them on the same date to make percentage calculations accurate.
