Jazz venue - name needed
[edit]In the mid-1960s there was a popular jazz venue in the huge basement of the Malvern Star building, 59 Pulteney Street (Hindmarsh Square corner), organised by Catholic Youth or some such. Nettelbeck and Ross were frequent performers there. Doug butler (talk) 02:41, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
- Have you tried asking on the Australian Jazz Facebook page? There's people from that era still active on there. I can ask for you if you'd prefer. Jimmyjrg (talk) 06:36, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Doug butler was it The Tavern? Jimmyjrg (talk) 23:09, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
- Rings no bells but sounds familiar. Apart from Nettelbeck and Ross, I remember a wonderful woodwind player (mostly flutes) named, I think, Ian Brown. I wonder if anyone has written a book about Adelaide music venues of the sixties. There were a lot: a trad jazz venue at the bottom end of Hindley Street near Register Street, again name lost. The only time I went to the cellar in Twin Street there was an electric blues or rock band playing, so loud it was painful.
- Folk venues: Tony Bowden's Catacombs in the bowels of Romilly House, North Terrace, Kent Town, and The Camille at street level in the same building. John Stevens' 'Folk Hut' on Rundle Street East near Sym Choon's, the 'Purple Cow' in a cellar roughly opposite, narrow stairs, sign "Mind Your Shoulders"; another on an Unley Road, Parkside corner (candles in bottles, wax running down their necks), the Purple Onion further down on the other side, raffia and rush mats everywhere. The Ambrosia upstairs in Adelaide Arcade, no decorations but good coffee. Another in Blackwood on either Shepherds Hill Road or Belair Road.
- So yes, I don't do facebook, but if you could do the honors ... Doug butler (talk) 12:54, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Doug butler. I've asked on Facebook. So far one reply, although not about the venue. John Roberts said: "Was that 'Ian Brown' on woodwinds actually Tas Brown on clarinet? I didn't know that he might have played mainly flute according to the group (?). I believe that Tas was a professor of a branch of dentistry at Univ. Adelaide." Jimmyjrg (talk) 03:55, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- Look, I'm even less confident about that name than anything else. I have a vague memory that he was athletic and blond, and maybe also played clarinet and baritone sax, but I'm positive as to the flutes, I had a few Herbie Mann records at the time. When first teasing my brain for his name I got Ian Smith, linking his name with the Rhodesian PM, then I wasn't so sure. It would only mean something if you were there at the time. - Unfortunately, no one on the Australian Jazz Lovers Facebook group could remember (so far), but they suggested reaching out to the South Australian Jazz Archive if you haven't already. Jimmyjrg (talk) 00:26, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the idea. I've sent them a short query. Doug butler (talk) 04:29, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
- Someone just replied to say "I have a poster in my collection advertising the Tavern at 57 Pultney Street in Hindmarsh Square. I also have another advertising the velvet Tavern but a different address. The South Australian Jazz Archive should have more details." Hope you find your answer! Jimmyjrg (talk) 01:07, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
- Tavern it was, then. Thanks, good memories. Doug butler (talk) 01:47, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Resolved
