In 1995, the 2 smaller blast furnaces, which had been out of operation for some time, were purchased by the Malaysian company, Gunawan Iron and Steel, for dismantling and shipping to Malaysia. A labour force was recruited from China to carry out the work, supervised by a management team made up of members of GIS, (Gunawan Iron and Steel), and the engineering company, Steel Engineers and Consultants.
