Citizenship (United States)
[edit][1] Tanith Belbin prompted a new law, attached to another law, to fast track her U.S. citizenship to allow her to compete on the USA olympic team. To be a member of the U.S. olympic team requires that any member of the team be a U.S. citizen.
Normally the law requires a five year waiting period once a person becomes a permanent residence. The law at this writting, has yet to be signed by President Bush, is called the Aliens of Extraodinary Abilities. [2] [3] --4.228.255.151 15:00, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
It has been signed by president Bush. Tanith is now a US citizen and will be competing with Agusto in the Winter Olympics.
My God that woman is beautiful. I mean, really.
She is pretty. But does anyone have any issues with her switching citizenship like that? I wonder why she chose to represent the land of George W. Bush, instead of her native land, Canada? Isn't the whole point of the olympics to represent your country? Even if she won, she'd be standing on the podium to the US anthem, and US flag. Does anyone else, particularly Canadians, have issue with that??? I'm in Kingston, next time I see her at Stages, or Brass or whatever, I'm gonna ask her that!
- Perhaps I could find the name of a right-wing Canadian idiot and start calling Canada the "Land of So & So". Stop stereotyping all US citizens as hardcore supporters of Dubya. Besides the real point of the Olympics is NOT for ppl to represent their countries in some hubris-laden contest--the point is for ppl of different countries to come together and compete in an atmosphere of friendship and goodwill. Nationalists seem to have forgotten this...as you have apparently as well....99.152.114.115 (talk) 17:35, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- I just included a Toronto Star column onto the external links section that deals with Belbin leaving Canada to Skate for the Americans. Hopefully, that'll give you some insight into her decision. Amchow78 21:06, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
If I recall correctly, Canada had a deep ice dancing field at that time. And quite frankly, Tanith wasn't good enough to skate for Canada. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.233.126.87 (talk) 21:48, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
Birthplace?
[edit]I've just added a Toronto Star column on Tanith Belbin's decision to skate for the US on the external links section. In this article, it says that she was born in Quebec, but grew up in Kingston, Ontario. This is contrary to what the NBC Olympics page says (born in Kingston, Ontario, but her hometown is Kirkland, Quebec). Also, a lot of other websites support the Kingston, Ontario birthplace info provided by NBC! Is the Toronto Star column, therefore, mistaken? Amchow78 21:07, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
- Judging by the obvious editorial slant of that article, I wouldn't count on in for rock solid facts. Slackercs 20:15, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
Re: Birth
I am Tanith's uncle by marriage. I was at Tanith's home in Amherstview, near Kingston, for Tanith's first birthday. It is my impression that she was born there, as her mother studied fashion design in Kingston, and as far as I know, lived there continuously. Her father's parents were living at the time in nearby Gananoque. I have no recollection of the Belbins living in Montreal anywhere near that time. Havivoca (talk) 01:03, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
Name?
[edit]Can anyone post some details about the name "Tanith", its origins, etc.?
- No idea how to verify it, but according to this site "Tanith" is a Greek name that means Goddess of Love. Slackercs 23:22, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- According to ESPN.com, the name comes from the Egyptian goddess of the moon, sun, stars and heavens. Amchow78 13:38, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
When her mother Michelle was a figure skater in Newfoundland, one of the girls in her skating club was named Tanis Adey. Perhaps she was influenced by that name. Havivoca (talk) 01:03, 31 March 2010 (UTC)—Preceding unsigned comment added by Havivoca (talk • contribs) 00:59, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
Hottest Female Athlete
[edit]According to ESPN (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=buckheit/060503&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab4pos2), she was voted the "Hottest Female Athlete." Should we include that, or is it just silly trivia? 66.231.113.170 21:48, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
Pic placement
[edit]The pic leaves a 10 inch (!) blank gap in the page on my computer's screen (1680 x 1050) when it's right aligned so I left aligned it, it looks fine in all resolutions on my computers screen. I just checked. Quadzilla99 01:36, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Also it in no way "screws up the article". Pics are left aligned in text all the time. Look around. Quadzilla99 01:38, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Here's five featured articles with pics left aligned in text:Ian Thorpe, Michael Jordan, Barack Obama, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Irene (1999). I could go on. Quadzilla99 01:47, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

POV
[edit]I just reverted a very POV addition to the article. With proper references, some of it could probably be added back, but it wasn't appropriate at all as it was. Brainmouse (talk) 22:51, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Crotch grab photo
[edit]Is the photo of "Belbin and Agosto enjoying their program." appropriate? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.73.64.154 (talk) 15:36, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- Absolutely. PM800 (talk) 16:12, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
