Although Thai and Tai are written the same in the Thai language, in English, 'Thai' refers to people to the bulk of of the country, such as the Northern Thai, Southern Thai, and Thai Isan (or even Thai Lao, as they are basically the same as the Lao ethnic group), but does not include 'tribal' groups such as the Tai Phuan, Tai Dam, Tai Yai, etc.
