[edit]I would propose that the "Uses" section be merged with the "Shape, height, and function" since they would seem to duplicate topics. --Gilgongo (talk) 23:48, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

- i really have no idea. internecine wars, perhaps? but you have to admit it conjures up some pretty funny images.Toyokuni3 (talk) 14:46, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

List
[edit]the 'types of' section needs to be spun off as a separate list. there is a list of chair types, and there have to be at least as many types of tables.Toyokuni3 (talk) 15:04, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Does anyone know if there is a historic connection between tables and benches?99.54.142.90 (talk)
Vandalism
[edit]A table usually has 4 legs. Often there is a base, and sometimes there may even be 3 legs.
I was disappointed when I linked from my web site to this page, because the first thing the user sees is vandalism: answers such as "upto 3 legs" are simply not acceptable.
Can this page be locked? --Uncle Ed (talk) 17:23, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
- This may no longer be relevant to you, but the proper place to request that would be at WP:RFPP. — LinguistAtLarge • Talk 20:14, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Does this page need to remain locked? (Has it been locked for over a decade?) ROADKILL (talk) 06:53, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
More general summary
[edit]Shouldn't the summary at the top be more general, or have some kind of rewrite? "The surface must be held stable; for reasons of simplicity, this is commonly accomplished by support from below by either a columnar "base" or at least three columnar "legs".", I can think of many more common examples of what could be classified as tables (a fast google search should det you some ideas, that still are common). What about wall-mounted tables? I think it would be nice if it got some more general "common description", or just cut that part out from the summary. 81.232.6.92 (talk) 02:03, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
Many improvements needed
[edit]This longstanding article is still rated "Start-Class", even though it is of "Mid-importance" (I agree with these ratings at present). I have tried to broaden the perspective somewhat, but the article is still very Eurocentric, with no coverage of other world cultures, and scant coverage of the world of work (as compared to the world of leisure).
I have set up a picture WP:Gallery for pix showing the wide range of table designs and uses that exist. Pictures should not be placed immediately next to the the text of the article, unless they are relevant and illustrative of some idea being discussed in the adjacent text.
The article is badly in need of some good footnotes; padding the article with dictionary definitions is not an adequate substitute. Particulars of specific table types can be found by following the Wikilinks, but this article should be the place for more global observations, generalizations, and comparisons, backed up by WP:RS. First item of External links "History of Table" is no longer available (domain (http://www.antiquestopic.com/history-of-table/) is up for sale) I found the latest webarchive backup from June 17th 2012: https://web.archive.org/web/20120617200144/http://www.antiquestopic.com/history-of-table/
I suggest replacing the obsolete link with the archived version. Uneven-sunflower (talk) 16:42, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
- Not done: Thanks for finding an archived version, but I've removed the link entirely as that page simply doesn't look very useful. The article itself now contains much more information. Ligaturama (talk) 18:41, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
