Pronunciation guide
[edit]The reason I reverted the edits that changed the pronunciation to IPA is this: virtually nobody uses or understands that gobbledygook, apart from linguists. I certainly can't make heads nor tails of it. Wikipedia in no way requires IPA for pronunciation guides: there are many, many other pages with plain old, non-IPA, understandable examples. This is not a resource for linguists or other specialists who require that level of precision in describing pronunciation of foreign phrases. ==ILike2BeAnonymous 17:43, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
It takes less than half a minute to look up the meaning of those symbols; what's more, some of them are self-evident. We can perhaps preserve an alternative way of transcription if you insist but I find it certainly odd (to say the least) to simply delete a piece of information that is relevant, useful and true. - Since you restored the IPA but also left in the "common man's" version, I guess we can live with that. But really, who in the world, apart from a few pointy-headed scientist types, can even make the least bit of sense out of those weird characters? Let's face it: the vast majority of people are not going to gain anything from this, as it's definitely in the realm of specialized knowledge. How many amateur Henry Higginses are out there? Not many, I'd bet. ==ILike2BeAnonymous 17:38, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
I'm not sure it's a viable approach. The aim of an encyclopedia is to spread knowledge, not to accommodate to the readers' knowledge by oversimplifying knowledge. If you find the article on IPA or its sounds too complicated, you can ask someone on their discussion pages to clarify them, but it's not the matter of this article. Einstein's words are usually paraphrased like this: "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler." If the matter seems to be complicated, it's not the problem of the matter but the problem of the people who haven't made the effort to explain it properly. But simply stating "that's too complicated" – well, we could delete all Wikipedia, because the simplest thing is to walk on the fields and smell the scent of the flowers and sing and dance, to stay on-topic. :-) That's also good, but it's not what an encyclopedia is about. This article says lots of things about Tanchaz (that it's an aspect of a folk revival, what it literally translates as, and that it draws authentically from several traditions) without actually defining it. Please rewrite the first sentence so it is an answer to the question, "What is Tanchaz?" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 18.187.0.71 (talk) 03:32, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
