Station history needed

This article needs a section on the history of the station. I'm usually pretty big on adding histories to station articles, but this article is pretty packed without one. If and when I decide to add it, I want to make sure I put it in the right place. ----DanTD (talk) 02:20, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see what's so confusing about it. They just swiped an old station from the Far Rockaway Branch and moved it to what is today the Port Jefferson Branch. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 18:04, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for clarifying and finding those sources. I rewrote it a bit to try and make it clearer. I also found another source[1] which mentioned there wasn't a proper station building before the Lockwood's Grove building, so I just said "former". I don't think we should mention the pedestrian death in this article. Yes it was tragic and received media coverage, but similar events have been removed from other articles. A couple of things aren't right about this; The source you added claimed it was between Wakefield and Mott Avenue stations, and that it's between Beach 22nd and 21st Streets. 22nd and 21st Streets are both northeast of Mott Avenue station. Plus there's the issue of the former name of Grove Street, which can't be found on there, but can be found on the near Inwood Station before the unfinished Nassau Expressway was built over it. As far as the pedestrian death mentions, if I'm not mistaken I believe this was added to heighten the stations history of severe accidents possibly due to design flaws of some kind. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 04:17, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The source claimed it was roughly between Wavecrest and Mott Avenue stations. Not exactly. It also didn't mention anything about present day Beach 22nd and 21st streets. These could have slightly moved in the last 140 years. If you doubt the reliability of this source, I think it's probably a question for WP:RSN at this point, as this site has been used to source many other articles. This isn't an article about Grove Street, so it isn't necessary to list the other name. The pedestrian death was never associated with any design flaw at the station, so attributing it as such would violate WP:NOR. The source I used said the station had the name "Far Rockaway-Grove Street." It doesn't say when the name was changed to "Lockwood's Grove," but it did show that it had two names when it was on the Far Rockaway Branch. That's where the "Grove Street" issue comes into play. Given the history of The Rockaways, it's not entirely implausible that the station might've been further east. Regarding the changes in street names and patterns and what not, I've seen some 19th Century maps of Far Rockaway and vicinity that have better details with the former street names, but I can't think of where I saw them right now. I hope you don't get the impression that I'm completely trashing your edits, because I do appreciate your effort to fix these. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 01:14, 23 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't take your source out. It's still there along with the one I added. I don't think that at all. I appreciate all of your concerns/suggestions. I hope you don't get that impression either. Station origins revisited

In light of some information during my work on a future station list for the Cedarhurst Cut-Off, I found some details about "Far Rockaway-Lockwood's Grove station" that will require a rewrite elsewhere. Bold text is emphasized by me;

ON DECEMBER 30, 1870 THE NEW YORK & ROCKAWAY RAILROAD COMPANY WAS CHARTERED TO BUILD FROM ROCKAWAY JUNCTION (LATER HILLSIDE) TO FAR ROCKAWAY. THIS LINE CROSSED THE SOUTH SIDE RAIL ROAD AT SPRINGFIELD JUNCTION AND RAN DIRECTLY TO OCEAN POINT (CEDARHURST) WHERE IT CURVED AND RAN ADJACENT TO THE SOUTH SIDE RAIL ROAD AS FAR AS FAR ROCKAWAY. IT THEN CROSSED THE S.S.R.R. AND RAN TO ITS TERMINAL AT LOCKWOOD'S GROVE. THE ROUTE BETWEEN SPRINGFIELD JUNCTION AND CEDARHURST WAS LATER KNOWN AS THE "CEDARHURST CUT OFF". THE LINE BETWEEN FAR ROCKAWAY AND LOCKWOOD'S GROVE WAS LATER KNOWN AS "THE GROVE TRACK". ABOUT JULY 1, 1871 THE LINE WAS LEASED TO THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD.
THE NEW YORK & ROCKAWAY OPENED MAY 14, 1872.

So, the info at Syosset station is fine as it is, but Inwood (LIRR station) has nothing to do with the old Lockwood's Grove station. Expect some extra work tonight. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 03:34, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Gap
