Overall Comments
[edit]- Seems fairly solid sorry for taking so long, this was quite extensive
- Oxford comma usage is inconsistent throughout the article
- 5 dead links which I have tagged
- The same historical population information is repeated throughout the article, it should be kept in the history section
- I am somewhat wary of the reliability of dictionaryofsydney.org but it seems reliable enough.
- Lots of information and statistics are from 2011 or older, newer sources would be preferred to prevent the article from becoming inaccurate and out of date
Sectional Analysis
[edit]- Lead
- I would trim down the references in the lead per WP:MOSLEAD
- Any more recent population figures/estimates than 2011? Looks like the lead and infobox are inconsistent
- The statement that "... making Sydney one of the most multicultural cities in the world" needs an independent source
- History
- south east Asia -> southeast Asia
- First sentence is awkward and could use clarification
- "Development has destroyed much of the city's history including that of the first inhabitants." Unsourced, seems to push a pro-preservation point of view
- Last two statements in the 2nd paragraph are unsourced
- Many unsourced statements in Establishment of the Colony such as "Britain decided in 1786 to found a new penal outpost in the territory discovered by Cook some 16 years earlier"
- localhistories.org/sydney.html is not a reliable source
- "Between 1788 and 1792 about 4,300 convicts were landed at Sydney. The colony was not founded on the principles of freedom and prosperity" unsourced
- Last two statements in the 2nd paragraph of EotC are unsourced
- Macquarie did make the most of less than ideal circumstances -> Macquarie made the most of less than ideal circumstances
- thriving new metropolis, neutral?
- "Macquarie undertook an extensive building programme of some 265 separate works" Awkwardly worded.
- "had a population of 35,000." Convict or total population?
- "For much of the 1930s up to one in three breadwinners was unemployed" Poor grammar and wording
- "When Britain declared war in 1939, Australia too entered" poor wording
- "Third paragraph in modern development doesn't mention World War 2 directly
- Unsourced population statistics
- "warmly welcomed" will need an independent source
- "Having arrived on the Royal Yacht Britannia through Sydney Heads, Her Majesty came ashore at Farm Cove. Sydney's iconic Opera House was opened in 1973 by Her Majesty" is this relevant?
- Geography
- "Captain Arthur Phillip, in one of his first reports back to Britain, described Sydney Cove as being "without exception the finest harbour in the world" seems to give undue weight
- The description of the area around Sydney is confusingly written
- Geology section is solid
- 3rd paragraph needs sources for the importance of weather patterns
- Urban Structure
- Not something you see in most city articles, but I like it
- A map illustrating the structure would vastly improve reader understanding
- "There has been accelerating commercial development in Parramatta since the 1950s as firms serving Western Sydney have set up regional offices and recognised the region's significant residential population mass and cheaper rents." Reference given does not support this statement
- 1st and 2nd paragraph in inner suburbs has many unsourced contentious statements
- what is the CBD?
- Outer suburbs has a variety of unsourced statements as well
- Is it possible to get more recent information on housing than 2006?
- "the most important green space" says who?
- link Royal National Park?
- "It is regarded for its well-preserved records of indigenous habitation and more than 800 rock engravings, cave drawings, and middens have been located in the park" needs an independent source
- Economy
- "These same policies helped to relieve the effects of the Great Depression during which the unemployment rate in New South Wales reached as high as 32%" wording
- have awarded Sydney -> have ranked Sydney
- Trim the list of corporate citizens?
- mortgagees?
- Is listing all the banks really necessary?
- This section could use more pictures or graphs to illustrate information about the economy
- Demographics
- This section is very unorganized and jumps all over the place
- "The concentration of immigrants in Sydney, relative to the rest of Australia (excluding Melbourne), make it the exception rather than the norm on having such a high foreign born population." Needs a source
- Culture
- "Rugby was played from 1865 as sport in general gained more popularity and better organisation." Poor grammar/wording
- The last sentences of the Sport and outdoor activities section need sources
- Religion is generally under demographics rather than culture unless there is a reason to keep it here
- Government
- "This lack of democracy eventually became unacceptable for the colony's growing number of free settlers." will need a source
- List of districts likely not needed in the main article
- "It has tended to resist attempts to amalgamate Sydney's more populated local government areas as merged councils could pose a threat to its governmental power." Is this a neutral assessment of the source?
- "who has in the past been" is he currently treated as such?
- Infrastructure
- Should education be under infrastructure?
- "57% have completed the highest level of school." 57% have doctorates? Please clarify.
- "Sydney once had one of the largest tram networks in the world." When?
- early 2019 -> early 2019.
- Australian capital city -> Australian state capital city??
- "NightRide is a nightly bus service that operate between midnight and 5am, also replacing trains for most of this period." Source?
- Transport map would add a lot to the article
- "Kingsford-Smith Airport is one of the world's oldest continually operating airports." Independent source?
- "Port Botany has surpassed Port Jackson as the city's major shipping port." Source needed.
- "Cruse ship terminals are located at Sydney Cove and White Bay." Also needs a source.
- "Sydney has in the past been criticised" by whom? Is this section giving undue weight to pro-environmentalist views?
- "catchment" Wikilink or clarify to a more common word. This might be an Australian English thing, please clarify.
- £2 million, historic or inflation adjusted?
- Information about overall electricity sources would be more comprehensive
- See Also
- This section could use serious expansion with the introduction of many more related links.
