Please incorporate reference to UNWTO's conceptualisation and definition of sustainable tourism, see http://sdt.unwto.org/en/content/about-us-5, see further Making Tourism More Sustainable, A Guide for Policy Makers (UNWTO 2005) and Indicators of Sustainable Development for Tourism Destinations: A Guidebook (UNWTO 2004) Note also that tourism should be judged against alternative economic activities. Yes, tourism does have an impact, but when developed properly, often less then many other activities. (213.98.51.34 (talk) 20:09, 12 September 2011 (UTC))
Is it possible that sustainable tourism be only interpreted/positioned within an economic development discourse rather than articulated within discourse on the environment? I note that the entries on examples on sustainable tourism seemed to be very much framed within 'how it generates cash/money". This reminds me of the increasing monetization of things that ought not to have "value" within a capitalist system.Themechacat 04:53, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Problems with the article
I note that there is little mention that the tourism industry as a whole is heavily dependent on unsustainable resource use, particularly in transport of tourists (peak oil, anyone?). This is an extremely obvious point to me, though I'm not that surprised to see so little mention of it. It seems people are happy with a prostituted doublethink definition of sustainability, even if I may be less comfortable with such mental acrobatics myself. It should also be pointed out that carbon neutrality does not mean sustainability - you can plant as many trees as you like, but that's not going to replace the oil you used up. Really, tourism using oil in transport is about as sustainable as coal mining, and this should be made clear from the beginning.
I also note the presence of small amounts of holisty crap, e.g. the popular anthropomorphism of "nature". What exactly are 'nature's rules' supposed to be? Richard001 (talk) 04:07, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- Planting trees can at most offset some of the past and present deforestation. Until there is a net increase in trees from the preindustrial level, tree planting has no available carbon credit surplus to sell to an unrelated economic sector. Thus even if we only consider carbon neutrality, there's no real-world method to get there unless every carbon-emitting sector makes actual, drastic emissions cuts to become individually carbon neutral. And yes, "sustainable tourism" cannot be based on petroleum. It is even less sustainable than coal burning since peak oil will arrive decades sooner than peak coal. There are a few groups capable of doing the arithmetic on air travel, such as Plane Stupid, but in general most air travelers are oblivious to the sources of their fuel (Tar sands anyone?), the consequences of burning it, and the prospects for future supply. The phrase "sustainable tourism" could only logically apply to tourism based on sustainable transport, which would include bicycle touring, hiking (from home!), wind-powered sailing, and (if sustainably powered) electric trains and electric vehicles. Obviously the traditional view of "sustainable tourism" considers only what happens after the guests arrive, while totally ignoring how they arrive and return home, with the vast majority of long-distance travelers relying on piston or jet engines burning liquid fuel from petroleum. For comparison, see Ecotourism#Criticisms which covers many of these points. --Teratornis (talk) 04:08, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
I agree that this article has major problems. Partly, this is due to scope being limited to economics, whereas the concept "sustainable tourism" involves environmental and climate issues, not just economic and social ones. The "economics series" sidebar is therefore inappropriate, and in its place there should be a link to the appropriate category, in the Categories section at the end of the article. When the article becomes more comprehensive, there need to be links some environmental and climate Categories. Also, the photo seems unconnected to sustainable tourism. I will begin to make some changes, but I don't have time for a comprehensive effort. Coastwise (talk) 04:26, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
A couple comments I found to improve the article:
First, most of the links work but 43 does not. The information from that site is also mostly quoted, rather than paraphrased/summarized. In addition, the entire text in-between “social & economic aspects” and “stakeholders” along with the second paragraph of “stake holders” are not sited.
For the environmental section, this is a large part of sustainable tourism, however it only includes mountain and coastal regions. Other biomes/areas are heavily ecologically impacted as well, such as wetlands and small islands. It would be beneficial to add more environmental regions. Also, the coastal region section is vague. It may help to add details like what are the “inverted funnel” and “embedded model”, what specific pollution or problems occur and what may be done to fix it (like what type of planning and management controls).
Finally, I agree carbon dioxide emissions and transportation are a massive aspect of sustainable tourism. It is presented in great detail in the introductory paragraphs (slightly overrepresented) and not mentioned again throughout the article (underrepresented). I think transportation in general is largely underrepresented, and it can be made into it's own section or added to the Environmental Impacts part discussing both the cost of carbon/oil/pollution and possible sustainable transportation. 128.54.144.6 (talk) 02:54, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

EL sorcerers apprentice
The External links section seems to have a random collection of organizations related to sustainable tourism, but I am not sure that's really consistent with WP:EL. Should there be some criteria for inclusion? I fear it may continue to grow like the sorcerer's apprentice. Thoughts? --TeaDrinker (talk) 08:34, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
wikify this
Article is lacking in wikilinks and cited data ; please wikify if you're reading and have the expertise!--ProfPolySci45 (talk) 00:01, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
An FYI that I agree. Could others please note here on the Talk page which words you'd like to see wikified. I don't have the expertise, but I know someone who does and will be working on this issue along with updating some sections with more current research. Many "citations needed" right now, and will be working on that, too.PlanetCare (talk) 11:23, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

Also appears this article could stand to be wholesale rewritten in paraphrase in order to facilitate easier understanding. I have set to watch this pg, but please go ahead!--ProfPolySci45 (talk) 00:04, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Blacklisted Links Found on Sustainable tourism
Cyberbot II has detected links on Sustainable tourism which have been added to the blacklist, either globally or locally. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed or are highly inappropriate for Wikipedia. The addition will be logged at one of these locations: local or global If you believe the specific link should be exempt from the blacklist, you may request that it is white-listed. Alternatively, you may request that the link is removed from or altered on the blacklist locally or globally. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. Please do not remove the tag until the issue is resolved. You may set the invisible parameter to "true" whilst requests to white-list are being processed. Should you require any help with this process, please ask at the help desk.
