Do we really want to list all targets here?
[edit]I am undecided if it's useful to have the entire list of targets here. I would prefer to write more in prose form. We have the link to the entire list of targets and indicators available now. Perhaps only list the main targets (which short discussions)? Also, similar question about the indicators. EMsmile (talk) 04:23, 7 August 2020 (UTC)
- this has now been changed, looks good now. EMsmile (talk) 14:10, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
To do list
[edit]These are improvements that could be made if anyone has time:
- Add some more maps (from SDG Tracker website / Wikimedia Commons) and images (Wikimedia Commons)
- Improve the flow of text in the background section because some of it reads like just a collection of facts but without good prose and flow.
- Improve lead to make it a better summary of the article
- Improve readability, make sentences easier to understand for laypersons.
- Find any other good progress reports for SDG 14.
- Provide more detail and references to the section on "linkages with other SDGs"
- Find more progress information for some of the indicators which so far don't have progress information provided. Could take more information from the HLPF report from 2020.[1]
- Add more wikilinks to other articles in Wikipedia and vice versa.
- Find Wikipedia articles that explain some of the key concepts that are used in the SDG 14 article. We should not have to created new articles - often times they exist but just under different names. EMsmile (talk) 14:10, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

The section on "challenges" needs to be re-written
[edit]Just flagging this up (would do it myself but don't have time right now): The recently added section on challenges is using very poor English. Can someone re-write it and improve the English? It might need to be shortened as well. EMsmile (talk) 04:05, 22 October 2020 (UTC).

New content added about plastic pollution and other topics
[edit]I've just added content about plastic pollution because I am currently working with an external reviewer on this article (Michael Petterson, see here). However, I am debating if this is now going into too much detail; so I might move some of it to marine pollution (I am planning to consolidate content about microplastics in oceans in one article and then link to that). This is work in progress. EMsmile (talk) 02:47, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
- I have also added text blocks on other topics now, namely ocean acidification, large marine conservation areas and seabed mining based on inputs from Michael Petterson and this book.[1] The upshot is that it fleshes out the article a bit more, rather than just listing targets and indicators. However, I feel that I might have added too much detail on ocean acidification and large marine conservation areas now and am contemplating which sentences and references should be moved to the respective sub-articles. New reports to be used (Aug 2021)
[edit]There are these two reports which should be used to update this article (on my to-do list but might not get around to it for a while):
- High level political forum from April 2021
- UNDERSTANDING THE STATE OF THE OCEAN: A GLOBAL MANUAL ON MEASURING SDG 14.1.1, SDG 14.2.1 AND SDG 14.5.1 by UNEP EMsmile (talk) 02:50, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
- I have now included some information from both reports but more could be done. We also need to find other reports that give updates on the status of the various indicators of SDG 14. EMsmile (talk) 08:41, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
