Where's the reception and ratings for Survivor: Samoa? --TMProofreader (talk) 14:49, 27 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jury table

[edit]

MPFitz1968, do you have a link to the discussion that established the consensus that the vote totals should be in reverse order to finalist names and the vote columns? Schazjmd (talk) 16:13, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Schazjmd: Wish I did. If anyone else can bring up any former discussion about this, it would be welcome. (I might look for it myself later.) But, no doubt I agree, the way the table is presented for the jury votes in this season of Survivor, and all other Survivor seasons, is misleading. Either the vote counts should correspond directly to the names of those who received them, or the order of the names should correspond to the vote counts as currently presented, from most votes to least. My revert of you necessitates this process. MPFitz1968 (talk) 16:26, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick reply, MPFitz1968. I'm going to start a discussion on the Survivor task force talk page, and since that group seems to be inactive, I'll notify the talk pages of each Survivor season. If there was an earlier discussion on the question, I wanted to see if there was some logic I was overlooking before starting it, but I couldn't find anything in the archives. Hope to see you at the discussion! Schazjmd (talk) 16:30, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Schazjmd: I was looking thru old versions of a few Survivor seasons and noticed at one point, the jury vote table was part of the main table on the very end (many times, you'd have to use the horizontal scroll to get to that part of the table). This changed sometime in early 2010, after the table got split up to show pre-merge votes in one table and post-merge votes in another. A significant discussion ensued in this particular season's talk page ... at Talk:Survivor: Samoa/Archive 1#Voting history. Following that discussion is when the jury vote table was split off from the rest of the table ... and the pre-merge and post-merge voting history were all back in one table. The votes were shown as number of votes for the one voted off followed by the forward slash and then the total number of votes cast (e.g., "4/7 votes" ... which in today's notation would usually be "4–3", but could also be "4–2–1" or "4–1–1–1"). It stayed that way until February 2014, when it was changed to the current notation ("4–3", "4–2–1", etc.), and this is the edit specifically at this article; I believe it was changed at the other Survivor articles as well during that time, by the same editor (I looked at only a couple of other articles from back then).

It was at that point that the problem occurred, where the vote tallies from the jury vote didn't match up with the finalists. The names, including those of the finalists, were listed per the original table's lineup, where it was in the order of the players voted out, or more accurately, reverse order of finish. I'm thinking in retrospect that it was a good idea to separate the jury vote table from the rest of it, since the finalists are not "eliminated", as one heading in the main table shows for the players voted off. (They are in the final tribal council, which marks the end of the game after the voting by the jury and revealing the winner.) When that editor in February 2014 changed from one notation to another—e.g., the original listing for this season was Mick 0/9, Russell H. 2/9 and Natalie 7/9—they didn't bother to notice what they were doing when summarizing the voting results as 7–2–0, while leaving the order of the names intact. (The other problem was placing the jury vote table in line with the main table, though still separate from it ... needing to use horizontal scroll again to get to it.) Brilliant research, MPFitz1968! That's a strong indicator that it wasn't a deliberate choice but more an artifact of the combined table (order of names) followed by an error in listing the vote totals after it was split off and the vote tally format changed. Which is a relief, because it makes it less likely that someone from back then is going to notice the changes that we made and object. On the other hand, it makes me wonder why the discrepancy hasn't bothered anyone else in 7+ years... Well, thanks for the initial revert; if you hadn't pointed out that my edit to Samoa made that article inconsistent with every other season, we never would have had the bigger discussion and made the fixes to all of the season articles. Survivor jury vote table discussion

[edit]

There is a proposal at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Television/Survivor task force#Jury vote tables to list the vote totals in the same order as the names in the finalist row immediately above the vote totals. All interested editors are invited to join that discussion. Since the Survivor task force appears to be inactive, I'm notifying Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Television/Reality television task force and the talk pages for each Survivor season in order to reach interested editors.
