Fake Quote

The article has a quote, which appears repeatedly from the 1600s to the current Wikipedia. I smelled a rat (there was too much variation in the quotes, and neither "mother tongue" nor "learning" strike me as very legislative) so I went looking for the original source.

Foxe's Book of Martyrs actually gives the full Act (maybe it is a translation from Latin or Anglo Norman??) and guess what? The quote as is it bogus: it is synthesized from different pieces of the act, but not what it says.

In fact, Foxe himself explicitly denies saying that the ban was on vernacular bibles per se: he had some margin note that people were confused by: see section 3 on here

So what is to be done? Is this original research? Or it is just straight-forward, garden-variety fact checking? The facts do not check out: so I think the best thing to do is to note that there is a discrepency, which is interesting in its own right. Rick Jelliffe (talk) 17:37, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
