Why is MLS championship not traditional?
[edit]Aricle says: this prize was originally "a product of fans wishing to recognize the team that, in a traditional soccer league, would have won the championship". My question, which I couldn't answer by reading the articles on MLS or MLS Cup is this: How is the MLS championship different from "traditional league" championship? I compared to UEFA Champions League, Serie A, and Preimera División de Mexico. There's ether not enough information to tell, or there's no perceptible difference. Thanks for any info. 198.49.180.40 19:08, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- I reworded the article to try to explain why. If you there's something you still don't get that I didn't cover, let me know. Recury 19:55, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for this. I guess what I'm getting now is that the MLS Championship is awarded to winners of a playoff, while "traditional" leagues don't have a championship playoff at all. Is there some article that we can link to which describes what's "traditional"? Maybe I picked some bad examples, but I saw 2 examples of very prominent league tournaments which have a playoffs and finals matches. How about we link the word "traditional" to this (I managed to find it finally)? 198.49.180.40 21:01, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- Well, traditional leagues do have a playoff, just not to decide the champion. It is usually called a cup (e.g. Serie A has the Coppa Italia) and runs kind of at the same time as the regular league games and it's sort of like a secondary title. That link would work, but what about this one? The intro to that article sums it up pretty well, I think. Recury 22:19, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- I think the first works better, since it talks about championships. The MLS Supporters' Shield is about recognizing who would have been champs under an alternative (if more common) set of rules. It's not about playing for cups. To me, the link you showed just muddies the water more, rather than clarifying what's different about the MLS championsip. Thanks for responding 198.49.180.40 23:17, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Overhaul & expansion
[edit]Added some info, rewrote a bit, added notes (the Shield comes with an asterisk a lot of the time, let's face it), added an image, created s'more redirects, and so on. The footnotes are currently broken - there's a wiki-wide problem going on today with cite.php, but hopefully it'll all be fixed soon. Bill Oaf 03:33, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- After purging the page, the problem is gone. Also added a clarification to the footnote for the 2000 Shield. Bill Oaf 19:59, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
"Trivia"
[edit]The numerous trivia at the end of the article while interesting add nothing to the article. This is an encyclopedia not a sport almanac. Please consider shortening the list. Winonanick 19 May 2007
Year Discrepancy
[edit]It is mentioned early on, "...the Supporters' Shield was created and first awarded following the 1998 season," however the table of Supporters' Shield winners lists teams starting with the year 1996. I'm guessing the table lists teams with the best records throughout the history of the league, and the Supporters' Shield was only awarded later. Perhaps this could be made more clear, or if that is not the case, the correct information needs to be conveyed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.101.176.143 (talk) 14:54, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
Official name of trophy
[edit]Is the official name of the trophy the "MLS Supporters' Shield" or simply the "Supporters' Shield"? If it's the latter, the article title should be corrected. --Blackbox77 (talk) 03:08, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- Cannot find any evidence the official name is anything other than the "Supporters' Shield." --Blackbox77 (talk) 03:31, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
Pictures / Write-ups on new trophy
[edit]Good to include the picture of the old/new trophies to the article? Perhaps a write-up on how the new trophy was commissioned may be great too? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 160.96.208.4 (talk) 01:59, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
Tie Breaker?
[edit]The currently listed tie breaker rules at MLSSoccer.com, have the Win count as being the first tie breaker. That's what's making the current situation between RSL and PTFC so odd. Portland has the GD but RSL has more wins. (Portland has way more ties to make up the difference.) — RossO (talk • contribs) 04:08, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
I would recommend removing the list of tie breaking rules as they are out dated. The award does not have any alternative criteria for rankin or tie breaking. Whoever MLS decides has the highest rank at the end of the season is awarded the Shield. Does anyone object to this edit? --RossO (talk) 07:54, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
Infobox Picture
[edit]So, the logo used in the Infobox isn't a a picture of the Trophy Proper, as is common in these kinds of articles. In fact, I can't find that logo used anywhere else on the internet. So, does anyone know what's up with that? Achowat (talk) 03:48, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
- Apparently it comes from the joint website for the trophy started by the supporters groups that started the award. I've seen it before. That said, it's just a poor choice of image, as it gives a false impression that it's the current design of the trophy. It's not. Nor is it the original design. It ideally should be a picture of the current trophy with another image of the original one further down in the history section.
- But, in fact, no where does the article actually mention that the original trophy (which wasn't actually a shield-type design at all) has been retired and replaced with a large round shield/plate trophy. In short, the article contains the records, but doesn't actually cover the trophies themselves, which are the actual subject of the article!! Totally needs fixing. oknazevad (talk) 04:07, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
Echoes
[edit]Thanks for the edit. Would this be appropriate?
- "It echoes the practice of other association football leagues around the world in which the team with the best record is the champion."
It's clearly not the case that other sports in North America crown the season winner the champion. It is common in association football (soccer) leagues though. Walter Görlitz (talk) 04:31, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
- True, and a good way to phrase it. Go for it. oknazevad (talk) 04:43, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
